who has 40d & 5d and loves both? Or...

Why should I have both...OR why did you chose one over the other?

Hello Dawg,

I'm assuming that you are actually referring to the 40D!

There are numerous discussions about this on this forum, try searching for "full frame" if you want to read a lot of discussions and debates..

In a nutshell, the full frame 5D is in a different class from the xxD cameras due to the larger sensor size with physically larger light-collecting "wells". These two things together mean you can get more pixels at a higher level of quality with the 5D, which becomes especially evident in low light/high ISO captures.

The 40D on the other hand has a faster continuous mode than the 5D (although some of us speculate that the "6D" will match this speed). This gives the 40D somewhat of an edge in shooting action.

The two cameras have similar construction (my 5D is slightly bigger than my 30D but is almost identical in design) so they do make a great companion set. I use my 5D exclusively for landscapes (more detail) and low light (less noise). My 30D has been a bit unused since I got the 5D but still is fine for wildlife and, say, keeping a telephoto lens on for getting a quick closely-framed long distance shot, but if I had to choose one over the other it would be the 5D -- it is the better camera.

I believe the next big release will be a 0.5D MK II1/2m, closely followed by a consumer level 150D.

After that anticipation will hot up for the new 0.25D that will use a Kodak Sensor, and eventualy plans are in place to release a 0.1AED that will use a whole new sensor technology called 35mm film.

I have a 5D and I have borrowed a friends 40D even though the 40D is a wonderful camera, I still prefer the 5D for the fact that any lens like the 24-105mm F4L is wide at 24mm. The 40D is a great camera I guess just the crop/mulitplication factor that is applied to lenses is the only thing that turns me off. In order to achive a true 24-105 you need a 15mm-66mm on a crop camera which doesn't exist. You can buy EF-S lenses, but alot people buy EF lenses for their crop camera either because of the range increase or their is no equivalent counter part

I shoot sports mostly and do nature and portraits, so think both would serve me well. And yes I did give up on the III (for now) because I am a poor little church mouse hovering in the church of
Canon Rebates... will my 24 70 and Tamron 11-18 be a good fit for these two? I am also wanting the Canon 15 and the 16 -35 II...are those good companions for these bodies? I also have 50, 85.1.8 and 70-200...Sounds like a good fam to me...but what do I know?

I think you'll be very happy with both bodies! Also, the two together will cost less than the MkIII -- how can you beat that?

As far as lenses go, what I use as a walk-around lens with my 30D is the EF-S 17-85. It won't work on the 5D, but on the 30D it gives a pretty good wide angle. For wider, I also have the EF-S 10-22. That one can be a lot of fun!

For my 5D, and for more demanding work, I've built up a collection of "L" lenses, but those are spendy. I do have a good range of them that stretches from 16mm to 400mm, and they work on the 30D as well as the 5D, and, now that the money is spent, I'm happy as a clam!

Since you do nature work, you will like your 70-200 on both of your bodies. The f/2.8 "L" version is one of my main lenses, especially on my 5D. However, if you include wildlife photography, you will eventually want to consider two additions: a 400mm (either a telephoto such as the 100-400 "L" lens or a fixed 400) and, especially more short -term with your 70-200, one or two teleconverters. I have the Canon 1.4x and 2x TCs and occasionally I do use them for more reach, even with my 100-400 lens (using manual focus).

All of this will be spendy, of course, and takes time to collect, but in the end it's fun and it's satisfying to get the most out of two great cameras!

Ditto. But I prefer to shoot with the 5D mostly. The 40D was primarily for those times I need the fps and 1.6x.

Completely agree.

I like them both, I like the 40D now more just because it's shiny and new and has some neat features. I am also waiting for the next 5D...but in reality AI really like the 5D a lot.

5D and 40D and find uses for both.
