Dawg,

Since you do nature work, you will like your 70-200 on both of your bodies. The f/2.8 "L" version is one of my main lenses, especially on my 5D. However, if you include wildlife photography, you will eventually want to consider two additions: a 400mm (either a telephoto such as the 100-400 "L" lens or a fixed 400) and, especially more short -term with your 70-200, one or two teleconverters. I have the Canon 1.4x and 2x TCs and occasionally I do use them for more reach, even with my 100-400 lens (using manual focus).

Thanks guys. This info really helps me relax wit with my decision. Tony I had the 100-400 and sold it, but did recently get a Canon 1.4 extender for my 70-200, but what I would really like would be the 300 2.8 which is about as far outside my reach as the MarkIII.

I have them both and use them both.
I find myself preferring the 40D at many occasions because of it's superior (much better) AF and overall faster handling.
The 5D rules for portraiture and high ISO work (above 800), it's my main wedding cam. However I can only use the center point with a fast lens on if I want to trust the AF.

Would love a 5D with the corresponding updates that the 40D has from the 30D.

Funny, I find the 5D AF to be just as good as the 40D if not better.

There has been a lot of discussion about noise, and how they compare on the 2 cameras. If you get the right exposure then you can keep noise to a min on both cameras, but I find the 5D to be much more forgiving.

Dawg.

I have both the 300 f/2.8 and the 100-400. I find that I don't use the 300 so much since I got the 100-400 since my wildlife demands called for more reach as well as more flexibility. Now I also have the 70-200 f/2.8, so I am pretty much covered -- I have had good cash flow times to enable my photography passion!

For now, get a teleconverter to stretch a bit. Depending on your prime lens speed you may have to manually focus, but it will help you get the shot. The 300 f/2.8 is a great lens, but it's quite large/unwieldy. It will, though, take a teleconverter without needing to manually focus, so with a tripod and a TC, it can get an award-winning shot.

You know, it is a toss-up with so many variables. But, your 5D is a great starting point as far as image quality, so if you carefully pick your lenses to match that quality, well, you will be in a win-win situation.

Hope this helps,

Tony

Funny, I find the 5D AF to be just as good as the 40D if not better.

My issue with the AF is that often when I use one of the peripherial points the fokus seem to slip off the subject and onto the background. This have occurred on many wedding pictures probably due to the low contrast in their clothing. The 40D cross sensors is much better in this situation.

I find the 5D ISO 1600 pictures cleaner, same place and same exposure. But up to ISO 800 it's a draw.

Completely agree.

Same here.
5D delivers a kind of "magic" RAW for portraits, street photography, interiors, low light and landscapes.

40D is a great camera with outstanding picture quality, and I mainly use it for fast action / tele photo.

2 bodies strategy is great, same good lens set used on both, very happy with this great combo.

This is a really interesting thread;

I was considering stretching to a 1D Mk3, but opted for a 40D for now and am waiting for 5D Mk2 (or whatever it is to be called). IMO this thread confirms my decision was correct.

Does $2350 for a 5d with grip and 150 activations sound like a good deal? They said it had dust on the viewfinder.

Dawg,
With a 5D, as I've said, it's all win-win. You can wait for the up-date, of course, and it's still win-win. Get the best body you can afford, then the best lens you can affoird -- it's all win-win.

If you want to see some pics from a recent day trip to Mount St. Helens, an active volcano in Washington State, with a 5D, click here (external link)

Tony,
Outstanding pics! I am already sold on the 5d, was asking now if $2350 sounds like a good deal for a used one with grip 2 owners with 150 activations.

$2350? Depends if it comes with a receipt or not. If it does and the warranty is valid, then I guess its an ok deal.

You can prob get a used grip for around $175. The price of the 5D seems to keep dropping, if you can get one around $2150-2200, then I would say just get a brand new one, especially if the used one doesnt come with a receipt.

Thanks Megatron...That sounds good. I didn't really want a grip anyway.
