I Just got the 5d and waiting on pokey DHL to bring my 40d before the end of the day. Hope to hit the lake and post my duck shots later. I put my 50 1.4 on the 5d and it feels so delicious in my hands! I am getting ready to finish up on my purchases for now. Just wondering...I was thinking of getting the AlienbR800, but think it might be more practical to get the 580 EX II. Also, what would be the best lens to add to this combo for sports, events and nature? I kind of want the canon 16-35 and the 15. Thinking of selling the Tamron 11-18 and get the 15??? Too many choices.

I have: Canon 20d, 5d, 40d

Extra battery
Tamron 11-18
Canon 24-70 2.8
Canon 85.1.8
Canon 50 1.4
Canon 70-200 2.8 ISM
Canon 1.4 Teleconverter
Canon 580 EX speedlight
B&W Slim Circular polarizer and other uv filters for all lenses
Manfrotto Tripod and Ball Head
Manfroto Mono pod and Ball head
other stuff

My wife's family is having a reunion today and I'll be bringing the 5D.. when I head out later in the week to shoot birds and wildlife I'll be bringing the 40D.

Dawg,

I think the 16-35 would be a great addition!

As far as flash, let me tell you what I did: I bought the 580 EX (this was before the II came out) and I bought two 430 EX's to use as slaves (as well as backups and two-camera setups). I've done some informal indoor work where the use of the slaves and reflectors served well.

Of course your needs will vary, but I do use that kind of setup occasionally, and thought you might find it interesting:)!

Lets just hope Canon don't go calling one of their cameras the 3D or all the idiots out there will realy expect it to come out with 3D pictures :)

Relationships are like photography, it has to click. :)

A ringflash is definitely on my list of wants! Great for macros and some portrait work, I imagine! Have fun!

I've been wanting a second body for a while and was deciding between a Mark III and a 40D. With the focus issues surrounding the Mark III, I went to take a look at the 40D yesterday at our local camera store. <Flame suit on> I don't know what it was, but I was completely underwhelmed. I had brought my own lenses to test on the body and was just surprised at how small the mirror and sensor was. Also, I was surprised at how the shutter sounds compared to the the 5D. I took some pics with the 70-200 as well and think that the focal range on a crop don't really suit my use as it seems to bring in everything too close. If I was a sports or wildlife photographer, I imagine that would be different.

So to answer the OP's question, I think if I do get a speed/crop type body, I'll hold out and get the Mark III. The only time I could see myself using a 40D is purely as a back-up.

My issue with the AF is that often when I use one of the peripherial points the fokus seem to slip off the subject and onto the background. This have occurred on many wedding pictures probably due to the low contrast in their clothing. The 40D cross sensors is much better in this situation.

I find the 5D ISO 1600 pictures cleaner, same place and same exposure. But up to ISO 800 it's a draw.

in those situations i use center point and crop. the huge file size is an advantage here.

because it's my new "toy" and it actually has some features that I find interesting. At first I thought live view was a joke on the thing but I really see the benefit, it's fast on focus, fast on fps, I really like it.

im always amazed why people ask...is the 5D better than the 40D...that would be like asking is a 2007 honda better than a 2005 Honda...yes, of course it is. higher quality and newer is always better than lower quality and older. why do you think the 5D costs almost twice as much?

Well, actually that is a bad comparison. I wouldn't compare that way. I got the 40D for my sports/low light work and the 5D for portraits, landscapes and probably weddings next year. They are both sweet, but the pros and cons are skewed by their strengths...just not fair to group them together. All boils down to what YOU want to shoot.
