As I have a 5D, it slightly upsets me that the camera gets referred to as a portrait/wedding camera. I gave my 5D it's first real test drive at the weekend shooting stills of a band filming a music video on top of a open topped bus(capturing fast actions and movement). This was a a hell of a challenge as we were thrown from pillar to post as it was driving around. I took around 190-200 RAWS and 6 came out unusable!(down to me using a really shallow DOF and some unexpected maneuvers by the driver!) The 5D exposes beautifully and the colours are outstanding, and sharp alright. It performed amazingly well considering the conditions.

3 fps is plenty for most shooting situations. Obviously if you are shooting sport/wildlife etc for a living then you will be looking at 1D series. I wouldn't let 3fps put you off buying the 5D.As said in the thread, a new model will have benefits over older models in some areas, but give me true full frame 5D DOF over number crunched "cropped sensor " DOF. But thats just me. I'm sure I will now be shot down in flames, but this is no rant at the 40d ,30d etc, just my experience of this 5D coming from a 10D.

regards Scott

Scott,

I have only had my 5D for a few weeks, so I don't mean to group it only under portrait or wedding. That was why I wanted it. That is what legions of people on here shoot with it, no harm meant and I agree about it exposing beautifully and the outstanding color. I found when I shot aikido the day after I got it the 5D & 40D the 40D defintely felt sporter and more responsive in my hand for the action shots(much quicker buffer, Coming off the 20D I was shocked the 5D choked and I had to wait for it). By the end of this week I will finally have a chance to really put them both through paces with what I shot. So far, I love them both. But for what I shoot mostly now...extremely fast action in extremely dark venues...I will reach for that 40D every time.

No offense meant, wasn't directing "portrait/wedding only" comment at you personally, just a lot photography forums hint that thats all its good for. Hey I'm really jealous that you've got both 40 and 5D! Not had a play with a 40D,but sounds impressive! Nice to hear a balanced view of both cameras in use.

cheers Scott

Well, actually that is a bad comparison. I wouldn't compare that way. I got the 40D for my sports/low light work and the 5D for portraits, landscapes and probably weddings next year. They are both sweet, but the pros and cons are skewed by their strengths...just not fair to group them together. All boils down to what YOU want to shoot.

I'd agree with the above, but would go on a limb and say further that the only reason one would choose a 40D over a 5D is fps and budget. IMO, those are the two most significant advantages. The 40D is a GREAT deal for the money.

The 40D has all those funky modes on the dial, it's a reasonable price, etc, but it's definitely targeted for the person that doesn't want to or can't afford to spend more. If someone doesn't need the speed and money isn't a constraint, I don't see a lot of reason to not get a 5D or 1D series body.

I don't own a 1Ds, but I don't have a problem admitting that it's a far superior body to the 5D. It's just fact.

If I didn't have a choice, I would have definitely gone with the 40d, only because of my experience with that lovely 20D and my style of shooting. If I was as blessed as Dwight I and Canon ironed all the issues out I would have gone with Mark III.

When I just had the 10D I thought that at some stage I'd probably get a 5D. Now that I have the 40D I probably won't get the 5D or its replacement at all. The 40D suits my needs perfectly. But then I like to shoot wildlife, nature and sometimes action (sports, people) so a FF would be more of a handicap than a help, except for landscapes. But have got some very pleasing landscapes with the 40D so see no reason to get another body.

Not saying I won't EVER get a different body, but it's not something I'm considering ATM.

hey, it's a compliment...if you can shoot great weddings and portraits with a camera, you can do anything. try shooting a wedding...they are as much or more fast paced than your pillar jumping ;) it's like buying a gaming computer...if it is good for gaming, it is good for everything else you could use it for.
