for those "OMFG" moments do you know if there is a setting where like on my 20D you just point and shoot with out the "what ISO etc questions to deal with

I know its a criminal question but in the last few days i have missed those chance shots setting the shot up

Nope. There is no "green box mode" on a 1-series camera. But, there is the "P" mode, which is the most basic setting on a 1-series body. However, ISO and everything else is manual. That's what I have the other cameras for.

LOL! Yeah me too. I had to go look to remind myself. My cameras live in TV, AV and M.

Well I have to ask. Why would you own a 1Danything and want to use it like a point and shoot? I'm not judging, I am more curious than anything.

instead of using a 1D as a point and shoot, why not just pick up a real point and shoot and carry it in your pocket for those moments?

more that fact that this is my camera of choice these days, in fact i hardly bring the others out anymore, so with this in mind i always seem to have it on hand (as opposed to carrying all my kit about with me) and there have been a few occasions where i need to pick it up and blast out a couple of quick frames.

I almost always have my cammera set to P mode when im moving or out walking, taken some shots i probebly would have missed if i hadent hade it already set in that mode. Then of course when i have time to make ajdustemnts i change it back to M or Av.

This reminds me of how things went last Saturday. I was heading up to Mount St. Helens, racing the sun to get late afternoon shots from various viewpoints. I had taken several pictures along the way before rembering that I was shooting at a custom white balance that was wrong, and was set to ISO 800, which of course was wrong.

Fortunately, I was shooting in RAW, so the WB was not a problem, and with the 5D the 800 made no noticeable degredation of quality. Kind of funny in retrospect!

If anyone wants to see the outcome, check out my pbase site linked below (if you click on "Recent" at the top of my home page you will see the gallery down the list) -- Mount St. Helens makes for an awesome day trip photo op!

Nice shots, Tony. I also live in Vancouver. I need to get back up to St Helens. Been awhile...

Yeah I was really excited to discover that I could do this! I see all the time that you can't get a quick shot without leaving the camera set on auto. What exactly about Av prevents you from doing so assuming that you leave it set on a middling stop, or just vary the setting as you move from light type to light type. If you're already lugging a 1D, why not go the extra step to get better shots?

You know, MkIII has this handy feature where you can program a second default shooting mode to activate and AF when you hit the * button,..

CFN I-14..
with it you would not even need to "switch" to P, when you wanted P&S mode, you just ignore the AF-on button and instead use the * button,.
But you need to set up how it behaves ahead of time.
Mine is set to "bird leaping off a branch into flight" settings :)
