My 30D lives in Av and Tv, but mainly Av mode, I have not ventured on the other side of the dial in a long time.

I have taught my wife how to check the basics and put the camera in the green box so that she can get a pic when I am not around. She has taken some pretty good pics that way and doesn't have to worry about all the other stuff.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

There is no ‘idiot mode’ on 1DMkIII, but you can always glue P&S camera to a toaster and have almost the same feeling.. ;)

Agreed :p

My 30D lives in Av and Tv, but mainly Av mode, I have not ventured on the other side of the dial in a long time.

Because I do a lot of landscape photography and a lot of wildlife photography, I've found that Av is my main mode: switch to an open aperture and, say, ISO 400 for wildlife (gives the fastest shutterspeed for the desired exposure when you are likely to encounter varied lighting), a small, say f/16 aperture and low ISO for landscape for good detail (using a tripod, so shutter speed be damned).

I'll switch to manual for special situations: like if I'm using flash and need to manually set the shutter speed for a certain aperture or if I'm manually bracketing a shot. I rarely use Tv.

Program mode is OK for knocking about picture taking, but so often I'm thinking about how I want a picture to come out, it's better for me to at least have the aperture setting manual.

Well I have to ask. Why would you own a 1Danything and want to use it like a point and shoot? I'm not judging, I am more curious than anything.

agreed.

And what is so hard about using the normal settings, even in a rush?
Both my bodies live in Av, Tv sometimes, and M rarely when the first 2 don't work. For my 1D Av and Tv are the only options I've left in the menu...

I know the feeling about wanting a p&S mode. I was driving on Pacific Coast Highway tonight and saw a disguised new Land Rover. I could have got a spy shot but I was driving and didn't have time to mess about with the buttons.

This is why I carry a pocket SD630 at all times.

LOL! Yeah me too. I had to go look to remind myself. My cameras live in TV, AV and M.

Ditto.

To the OP - Program mode will do some of the thinking for you, but you'll still have to set other things such as ISO etc...

That would be a black toaster. :)

Do you really have to worry about the ISO in a MKIII. Noise across all ISOs are pretty low so dumping it in P and shooting away will give you a great pic no matter what ISO the camera was previously set to. Mow self timer and mirror lockup is a different thing. I hate when I forget to switch it back.

There are more modes other than Av, Tv and M? Might have to take a look at my cameras again!

When I put my cameras away for the day I set them to P, AWB, ISO 400, AI Servo, etc, i.e. a basic setting that will let me get something if I need to take some quick shots the next time I grab them out of the bag. You have a lot of control in P mode too, it's underrated IMHO.

I just hate it when the camera is left with mirror lockup enabled or on ISO 3200 from the day before and I try to take a picture of something cool - it has happened more than once. :)

Back in the good old days, 1978, a professional photographer was able to get four shots of a PSA 727 just prior to crashing. One shot (and the story) may be seen here. He had scant seconds for all four shots, and no time to worry about settings.

He did this by always keeping his manual-only SLR (a Nikon) in "Brownie" mode. That is, aperture and shutter speed were set to emulate the famous Kodak Brownie (Sunny-16 minus one stop, focus set to hyperfocal distance). By doing this, the camera was always ready to take a picture at least as good as would be obtained with a Brownie, the premier P&S of the day.

This way, he was always ready to shoot, instantly and without thought to settings. When he had time, he would adjust the settings (especially focus) for a better shot.

In this day of automatic everything, we tend to forget the obvious. Even a 1D can be made into a fixed-focus point-and-shoot.

M-mode, ISO at 400, aperture at f/16, shutter speed at 1/800 sec., lens at around 100mm, focus at hyperfocal distance...Voilà! A very expensive P&S is born! Absolutely ready for instant pix.

Then, play with the settings if you have time.
