Had the day off from work so made my usual trip to the Bronx Zoo.
Figured I finally test out the 40D.

nicksan,

Nice shots, but on #2 it looks like the camera focused on the top of the head just above the brow (the nose was out of focus). Was that your focus point, or were you trying for the eyes, or did the 5D have a front-focus moment?

He, he. Still learning how to tame the 100-400L. I kinda like that shot though, that's why I put it up:D

For some reason, my hands were especially shaky yesterday and I got a lot of misfires.

I think part of the "issue" with the 40D for me was that because of the 1.6x CF, I really had to pay attention to the shutter speeds. I've gotten used to 1:1 with my 5D, so that kinda threw me off. Not to mention the fact that I have yet to "master" my 100-400L. (Got plenty of blurry shots even though I had more than enough shutter speed at times)

I really noticed the difference in light between the 2 bodies. Switching to the 5D was like taking off weights. It was immediately noticeable.

Is it me, or are the WB a little different between the 2 bodies? I had them mostly set to AWB and it seems like the 40D is a tad bit warmer than the 5D. I guess this might be old news. (?)

Also, the 40D's LCD screen definitely has some kind of tint on it, not that I really pay attention to that. I don't really rely on the LCD other than the most obvious stuff. I will say that things look a little "off"...but I digress. But I guess this also is old news.(? Sorry, haven't been keeping up with all the 40D talk)

The gorillas and tiger were shot through the dirty glass they have there. So naturally, I had to up the blacks and contrast during RAW conversion. (He, he, I guess that leaves only 1 pic!)

Other than that I did the usual, Noise Ninja & USM in PS.

Am I missing something or do your 5D shots simply blow away the 40D?

Can't see much difference personally. Both look really good. Maybe the reduced DofF is adding a little pop.

I don't think it blows away the 40D.
However I do prefer it over the 40D IQ-wise, that much is certain.

As I mentioned before, with the 40D's 1.6x CF I may have been a little too casual with the shutter speed with the 100-400L so a lot of my pics weren't as crisp as the 5D's. I think this is a big issue since I didn't have the steadiest of hands yesterday.

If you look at the pic of the bird with its wings spread, that's a pretty good indication of what it can do. Quite happy with the IQ on that pic.

Yeah, could be.
Plus as I mentioned, I don't have comparo pics...difficult to compare completely different scenes. The one common scene I have is of that child gorilla, and I know that I fumbled up the one I took with the 40D...not the greatest at 100%. In fact, my keeper rate was VERY low, but really that's my bad and not the gear.
