pictures on - pictures off - why?

Hi

How come that one day, I see the pictures here, the next day I can't. This applies to original size pictures 800px width and below, as well as pictures resized to 800px. This is so with IE as well as Firefox, while with both browsers I can always see the pictures in other photo forums. So I conclude it has nothing to do with my browser or firewall settings - but what is it?

TIA
:( flowe

pictures on - pictures off - why?

Hi all, hi Pekka

The problem isn't solved.
I can't see any pictures on potn, *apart from* the one at
https://photography-on-the.net/forum/faq.php#24
This one I can see all the time.

With all the others, the only info I get is this:
(FORUM INFO: image size as posted, 666x506)
in semi greyed letters.
There is no empty frame with the "broken link" icon
or any other sign of the picture.

Even more peculiar: in the thread
https://photography-on-the.net …ad.php?t=39209&highlight=
I have been able to see all pics, even downloaded one,
modified and uploaded it to my own site for demonstration:
http://homepage.hispeed.ch/flowe/digifoto/roro_04.htm (external link)

So, *at that time*, I've seen the potn pictures :D
but now, I don't see any of them anymore
and this is so most of the time, ie. weeks and months!

This refers to IE6 as well as Firefox 0.9.3 - no restrictive settings.
In other forums, I can see all the pictures - no problem whatever.
So it seems unlikely that it is a matter of local settings, firewall or ISP.

There must be a difference between the faq one and all the others on potn,
and there must be some difference between 04 Aug 2004 15:56,
when I downloaded the then modified picture as opposed to before and after this specific time.

What could it be? Can this be improved?
Do other visitors observe similar behavior, or is it just me??

Very many thanks for upcomong help!
flowe

None of the images you see here are hosted here.. they are hosted on the sites of the individual posted and just linked here.

If your ISP does not download the images form the host site you won't see them.. or if the individual who uploaded the images has taken them down....

You can usually find out where an image is hosted by right clicking on the image and selecting "properties"

P.S. the images you link to in the second thread are still displaying fine for me.. so I think the trouble is "on your end" be it settings in your browser, a firewall,. antivirus/antipopup software, or ISP.

Flowe,

You might want to check this thread if you haven't:

http://www.photography-on-the.net …ad.php?t=27563&highlight=

I remember somebody else having a similar problem as yours earlier this year so I did and search and finally found it. The person having the problem finally figured it out and hopefully his "fix" will apply to you, too.

Hi PacAce - and CDS

I read the tread you linked, and it points to the firewall. Sounds reasonable, but I can't see a setting that's responsible and pertaining only to potn. Well...

I'm going to the ZoneAlarm Gurus - I'll let you know.

Thanks
flowe

Pictures on - pictures off - why?

Hi all

After some days, I came back to this. As I said, I went to the ZoneAlarm Forum, where MuffinCharizard suggested to experiment with the Privacy settings in ZA Pro.

And this is what I did:

I added the potn URL to Privacy/Site List, right clicked it and selected options, bringing up the Privacy Custom dialog, but now under the heading "Site Options".

In the Cookies tab, only the 3 options in "3rd party" section are blocked - enabling any of them did not help.

But in the Ad Blocking tab, enabling "Banner/Sky Scraper Ads" did the trick: now I can see all the pictures in the potn forum. Pop-up and Animation remain blocked.

Mobile Code tab remains as before: enabled are JS and Mime, blocked are scripts and Java/ActiveX.

I can't see a connection between the Banner block and the pictures - but the important thing is: it works!

I think this approach might help with many ZA problems, and I'm reporting here on behalf of other visitors in similar situations.

The problem nagged me for months!
flowe :D :D

A logical solution to the problem, knowing how PotN works. All images are hosted on "3rd party" servers, not on PotN itself. To programs like ZoneAlarm the images look like banner ads since the image comes from another server.

It should be noted in ZA's Tech Support and/or FAQ, but removing the anti-banner stuff would be bad as it's really a great feature of programs like ZA.

Anyway I'm glad your problem got solved - it's must have been quite frustrating indeed!
