You need a hot shoe adapter to fit in your hot shoe on your 400D since you don't have a sync cable port. See MichaelBass Designs blog, or FlashZebra.com.

You'll probably find one cheaper in an actual store. The $5 sounds nice, but the shipping for it is $10... You'll get a better price in a brick and mortar store.

Until you get one, you can set your Custom Functions to disable ETTL, and shut off the pre-flash. Then you can fire them both as optical slaves in the meanwhile.

What custom functions are these? As far as I'm aware you can't disable ETTL on the 400D.

That I don't know off the top of my head, but I'm sure they are hidden away either in the regular menu or the CF menus.

I had to do this a while back, because the PW unit in my strobe wasn't working, and I didn't want to use the PC cables.

Sadly, you can't disable the preflash on any of the Canon DSLR's.
Rather odd, considering you can do it on most of the compacts.

I know for sure that you can, because I have done it... Let me just see how I do it... Hmm... AAAAHHHHH... I used my 430EX to do it. I put it on manual mode and really low power.

Sorry about that. I could have sworn I was able to do it with just the camera.

You can turn off the flash on an off camera flash (i.e. a 430ex) and some ex series speedlites let you work in manual mode, which has no pre-flash.

But, you can not disable the pre-flash on the on-board flash.
