I stopped by a local state farm agency and asked about insuring my gear. She asked if i was a pro, i said no its just a hobby, and expensive one at that. Then she asked about how much do I think it totals. I gave a ball park figure of around $5000 to be safe. Looked it up in her book and I believe she said $69 for the year. Which Im definitely going to do, but......I need receipts for everything I want covered.

I have my receipt for the XT I got at bestbuy in spring of 2005.
Current 40D and all accesories from B&H
40D grip and other accessories from local shop
And I should have the receipt for my 24-105 F4 L

But I can't find receipts for my nifty fifty, xt grip, and other small things.
But my biggest fear is about the stuff I've purchased on here thru the "for sale" section. I bought my sigma 70-200, tokina 12-24. I've also bought my sigma 2x and sigma 8mm f/4 fisheye from ebay. How can I make sure those will be covered? Can I just show them current retail prices for them?

Well I just called USAA yesterday and had to update my gear policy. I had been meaning to do it for a while now. When I gave them my very first list of gear to insure I had to email receipts and warranty cards with serial numbers on them. This time the guy did not ask. He simply asked the value of the items. I will call back Monday and see if I need to send in receipts because I dont mind doing that.

Nonetheless, camera gear insurance is well worth the money.

You do not need receipts but you do need photos that show clearly what you own. I would also recommend etching in some fashion (if possible) a phone number on your gear.

I have a personal articles policy through State Farm for all my camera stuff, my laptop and my guns. I have only had to provide receipts for my 70-200L.

Added 15,000 in gear coverage and I think 500,000 in liablity. Only like 160 I think, I was told I didnt need reciets at that moment but im sure some proof of purchase if my gear is ever stolen will be needed, Luckly I have all my invioces and a few pics of all my gear together.

i set everything up yesterday. $6000 worth of gear roughly at $83 a year.

i just need to take pictures of my sigma 70-200, sigma 8mm, sigma 2x and tokina 12-24 and give them serial #'s. I did give them printouts from b&h so they'de have a price to go buy. Oh and big props to b&h for beeing able to print out receipts for all my purchases so i had them incase I needed them all.

Wow! You guys are getting off easy~ I am getting an insurance policy from State farm and the initial quote was in the ballpark of about $700-800 that includes liability, because I have to get that marine policy since 99% of my shooting is on location. I just need to supply list with serial numbers. I couldn't believe I had accumulated so much equipment. maybe I should get a second quote.

what if you bought something used from someone on the forum? there would be no receipt.

I wonder what the difference in pricing is for those who make money but not a living at photography.

I just gave them serial numbers. I think it costs more if you are going to use your equipment away from home, because it is so much more vulnerable to damage and theft.

what's the point in having gear if you don't take it out of the house?

I sat down and photographed all my gear recently. I then photoshopped the description and serial number of each item right onto the image. I made several sets of the images. I burned one onto a DVD and stored it in a fire-proof safe in the house, left one copy on my external hard drive and uploaded a third set to a private gallery on my smugmug. If anything happens, I should be able to retreive the information without any difficulty.
