Am I the only one who doesn't understand this? Why "Mark I", "Mark II", "Mark III," etc.? Can anyone point me in the direction of the origin, or explain it? Thanks so much.

I guess this could go into the lenses or even general talk.

Hehe, it's not called Mark persay, it's just it's easier to differentiate from the other models by saying it's the mark II rather than just II (a bit like issue II or similar)

Though personally I always prefered Bob

Same thought process as the Ford Motor Company's Lincolns. Just a fancy way of saying "Version"

I thought it was derived from the word Marque!

I think it is per se... but Mk /Mark is version another way to say version sort of in the same class and to differentiate a classs.

What's really interesting is in some instances, like Jaguars, the numbers are sort of out of sequence. The Jaguar Mk V came before the Mk Iv.

Interesting question.
Answer: dunno.
Originally from the Old English mearc, but how it came to be used in this context, I haven't been able to establish.

Just an aside - I guess if you had 3 sons, you could call them Mark I, Mark II, and Mark III.
Reminds me of the time I first met a person by the name of "Ethan". I asked if he had an older sibling and if both parents were chemists. :) (Too obscure?)

Historically it has been used before by Germany in WWII to identify the revisions of their submarine torpedos.

I guess no one really knows, or it's just used as a mark placer. I thought maybe a Canon executive had a nephew that liked photography who was named Mark, or liked Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, or something cool like that.

No because Canon isn't the only company that does it.

Stranger things have happened. "Mercedes" was named after the daughter of one of the founders of the Daimler company!

Yeah, but how and when did "mark" become a synonym for "revision"?
Apart from biblical references (Mark I, Mark II, etc, referring to particular chapters), I can't find a reference earlier than about the 1940's.
