Congrats on the new camera and welcome to the forum. Your equipment combined with this resource should really create some great photography.

Post some photos when you get a chance.......

Congrats, treat her well and she'll treat you well! Dump that lens ASAP and get some real glass!

Welcome to POTN and congrats on the 40D! Once you learn it, you will find yourself wanting better glass. I would follow the advise of Tim. ^

Just in time for rebates. I'd shoot with the kit for a while then decide what kind of glass you want. My first will be the 17-55 as soon as Amazon gets off their ass and puts up the rebate.

Canon 40 D with 17-85mm kit lens, cant wait to take my first pic

Congrats and welcome to the 40D world!

By the way, does anyone know why they changed the kit lens from the 28-135 IS, to the the 17-85?

Does the 17-85 have IS? I bought my kit about 1-1/2 months ago and all they offered was the 28-135.

.

-Canon EOS 40-D with vertical/battery grip, wireless remote shutter release
-Canon 10-22mm F3.5 USM (with hood)
-Canon 70-300mm F4 EF IS USM (with hood)
-Canon 28-135mm F3.5 EF IS USM (with hood)...and many more items.
-Check out my photography here (external link). And here (external link), too.

A number of kits were introduced, and availability varies depending on where you are. The 17-85 is indeed an IS lens and a very nice one at that. Highly recommended.

I bought my 17-85 separately in the days of my 350D, but I would not hesitate at all to pair it with my 40D. It's currently not with me but I miss it and look forward to getting it back. Soon, soon........

Yes, the 17-85 is USM IS and is a very nice lens indeed. I don't think that it is something to just dump, it is a $600.00 lens and is great for that camera. Enjoy it!!
