IR Shutter Trigger

I am looking for an IR trigger for my IIn.

What I want is a light beam that activates the shutter release when the beam is broken...ie: if a bird flies though it, a ball drops though it, etc.

I seem to recall Canon having an Infra Red (IR) device but can not find it....anyone know if there is an aftermarket tool for this?

The Canon IR remote, at least for my 400D, is only a remote shutter/timer release and won't function as a proximity trigger. I'm not aware of any commercial products - that is something that you'll need to build yourself though you might be abale to find a DIY kit. This is actually quite a common project for people interested in high-speed photography and there are various circuit plans available on the web for this and similar projects. If you know your way around a schematic and can handle a soldering iron, its not very complicated.

You might be able to start with something simple like this pre-constructed controller - http://makezine.com/fl​ashkit/ - and just wire it to whatever connector the 1D uses for its remote shutter release (or wire it into a cheap ebay remote shutter release).

Well Nikon Makes an ML-3 IR Cable release that does what i want....so, does Canon? I can't find it...legacy stuff perhaps?

It might not be too hard to actually modify the Nikon unit to work with Canon. I'd think all you would need to do is to replace the shutter release connector with a Canon type. Simple mod really.

I was wondering just how I might do that......I guess i can buy one and take it apart see where it leads me

So far I have Nikon Lens caps ('cuz the canon ones stink) I have an SB 24 I can fire via IR from the Canon...and now a Nikon IR trigger...hummmm kinda weird.

Soon it will turn onto this!

GB, That's funny I was thinking that 5 minutes ago, now I'm going to trawl the web for Nikon lens caps to fit my 70-200 and 16-35

Yeah, you should only need to snip the end off of the cable and use a meter to figure out which wire is the shutter release relay contacts then graft on a compatible Canon type connector. You might need to pick up a cheap Chinese 1D wired shutter release on ebay for the connector.
