Hi there,

today I thought I would try shooting insects for the first time using the MT24-EX and with the second different diffusers I made today using the same plastic and Velcro, I am still getting used to the MT24-EX and flash in general. Things were going well the subject's seemed to be lighting well as the first shot shows, then I needed to change battery's in the flash from 2100 mah to 1800 mah and thats when something happened. I don't know what any help would be appreciated.

The third shot is the diffusers I made today.

Regards Darren

Comments and criticism and help appreciated.

It seems like you're having a connection problem between the camera and flash (seeing as it is reporting the mode and type incorrectly).

It looks like on the second one the flash wasn't detected by the camera (negating E-TTL), but it was tethered to the body and fired at full blast (if the other contacts aren't connected, but the main one is, it'll fire in manual mode).

Just make sure it's seated properly and is detected by the camera (there will be a little lighting icon in the viewfinder if it is).

Good shot - As commented elsewhere- think this is just the flash controller not seated properly on the hotshoe.
I've done this several times and had a minor panic - I now carefully check the seating when I play with my off camera cord - (two connections to worry about on that)

good lighting in #1. My flash does the blow out thing quite often as I use a cheap Jessops off show adaptor which has too much play on the hot shoe.

bannedPermanent ban

Another thought - if the flash is set to slave, then things also go all funny, I've done that in the past.

A tip to everyone - do NOT overtighten the locking wheel on the flash. Doing so, according to Canon, will end up causing the locking pin to get stuck, and Canon will NOT fix it under warranty. I argued this point with Canon Australia, that a) I wasn't overtightening the flash, and b) none of their literature mentions it anyways. Canon basically said stfu to me and made me pay for the repairs. In 20 odd years of using a Canon 420EZ, I never had an issue, and I wasn't doing anything differently between the old and new flash...
