Holy Mackrel! 162,000 images! Canon should have used you and your 10D in some advertising...

Yeah too bad those 162,000 weren't mine. I bought it as a "Bargain" condition on KEH and it only lasted me about 3 months and 1,000 snaps...

Did KEH do anything for you at that point, or were they more "let the buyer beware".....?

They were basically "Sorry about you're luck but we'll repair it for $XXX.XX"

My own fault for buying a Bargain camera body sight unseen, but I haven't made any purchases from them since. I recouped almost 50% of my purchase price by selling it on eBay so that helped some. I bought my 2nd 10D + Sigma 28-70 f/2.8-4 + CF card + bag and a grip (separately) on here for less than I paid for the body alone there...and it's in much better condition. I sold the lens, bag, and CF card together and made out even better. The sale of those extras paid for about half of the loss on the first 10D.

Keep the 10D - convert it to IR and buy a Mark II

To be honest - spend the extra $ and get the Mark IIn. Bigger LCD screen, better dual card usage, and I was always sus on AF issues on some Mark II units, supported by the fact that many sports photographers were unhappy with the Mark II AF. If you can afford it, keep the 10D.

I am surprised at how good the noise was on those shots, for ISO 1600. That's better than ISO 800 appears on my 1D unit, I'm not joking. I've seen several images posted from other's 1D units at high ISOs that make me think that there's some sort of problem with my 1D unit at higher ISOs, and more noise than there should be. I'd be surprised if the 10D was much better than the 1D in terms of noise though - my D60 is noticeable noisier at all ISOs, especially from ISO 400 and above, generally by about a stop. I doubt the 10D would have a stop improvement in noise, especially since it's Digic I, and effectively 2nd gen CMOS chips, whereas the Mark IIn is essentially 3rd gen CMOS, and Digic II (1D is pre Digic). I notice about a stop in noise improvements across the board when comparing the 1D to my 1D Mark IIn.

I will be keeping the 10D as a backup. Sounds as if I will be looking into the MkII for my new camera. I just want a faster shutter speed at high ISO's. I dont have a noise removal program, and I use PE 2, just to adjust levels on the shots I take.

I dont think that 1/180 f2.8 @ ISO 1600 is good enough for stop action sports.

Canon 1DMkII, 10D w/grip, 28-135 IS, 70-200 2.8 L, 300 f4 L IS, 1.4 MkII, 2X MkII, and too much more to list.

Sounds like in the end it it worked out for you, I remember you selling that Sigma lens, bag and other items together as I was going to buy them at one point.

I guess with a camera like a 10/20/30D a place like KEH has no way to know how many shutter actuations are on a particular body.

Buying a "Bargain" rated camera from KEH is a crapshoot, as I'm sure CDI knows.

Here's KEH's description:

"BGN "Bargain" 70-79% of original condition. Shows more than average wear. May have dents, dings and a goodly amount of brassing and finish loss. Glass may have marks that should not affect picture quality."

i was in the same situation and considered the 1DmkII but went with the 5d for low light and better overall PQ since 3fps was not a limiting factor.

the mkIII price was $2k too much.

if you really, really need the 1D controls and AF you have no other choice but the 5D was a huge upgrade from the 10D in regard to PQ, focus, speed (startup/wake as well as preview/histogram/play/zoom).

forget the original 1D though, battery life/issues alone make that undesirable plus the low light capability is lacking compared to newer cameras.

good luck.

I have used my 10D for years now and love it, but was shooting grandsons soccer last night, and wasn't really happy with with SS at 1600 ISO. SS was only 125-180, not really ideal for nighttime sports. I am wondering about updating to 1D or 1DMkII series (cant really afford MkIII's yet). Not really sure which will benefit me more.

I shoot studio and outdoor portrature, commerical, and sports for local newspaper. I guess my main concern would be IQ between the 1D and the MkII. Which series would work the best for high ISO shooting?? Thanks for all the input..

Mack used camera warranty (one year or two year) would have been a smart piggy-back purchase. for those reading...

I don't think MkII's faster shutter speed (or fps if you meant that) will help you stop action sports at night and at ISO 1600. What you need is faster glass or ISO 3200.

Nothing in that description from KEH really has much to do with the shutter mechanism........and is really written for lens descriptions.

keh gives a 60 day warranty on all 2nd hand cameras, I'm surprised that you didn't hit 1000 shots within that time frame. I've found keh's customer service/support most excellent in all honesty.

As to 5D - if you're going to shoot sports, which the OP is, I wouldn't recommend the 5D. Just my take...get a mark IIn if you can, mark II if you can't. Faster glass will help, but you'd probably need to look at a 200 f1.8, and that's a lot of money (since that last shot was already shot at f2.8). You'll get about a stop improvement in noise from the 1D to the Mark II/n, probably a stop improvement over the 10D I'd guess (at least if it's similar to my D60).
