A word from the wilds of Africa...

As some of you may recall, my Mkiii was particualrly "bad" and was returned to me from service just days prior to my departure.

Service mentioned the "electrical adjustements" to AF system as repair.

I am in an internet cafe a day prior to my return, I have not been able to view any of my images on screen (other than the MkIII's own LCD) so I do not have a good idea of total results,.. but I can offer this re: a "fixed" MkIII

The camera has performed seemingly flawlessly for me for 90% of the shooting I'm doing even in high temps.

However, this aside, I have had oportunity on this trip to shoot it totally side by side with the MkII in the same circumstances on the saem subjects, and there is not doubt in my mind that for BIF shots particulary where the background is busier, the Mk2 still excels. With this one caveat, the repaired MkIII has been a joy to shoot.

When I get back I will be able to reveiw the images, hopefully my assesment will remain accurate.

Thanks for checking in. Looking forward to some wonderful shots!

CDS do you have the 1.1.1 update installed?

Heard that Canon are sending out repaired mk3's with the update.

I sincerely doubt it. He had his camera serviced over 3 weeks ago, and none of us had even heard of 1.1.1 then.

I'm not short. I'm concentrated awesome!

Statistics contribution:

Received camera on 9/14/07, two days ago (i.e. after the supposed hiatus). Ordered 7/27 at Ritz Camera. Serial # in the 532k range. Firmware 1.1.0 as received from Ritz.

Trip to SeaWorld San Antonio yesterday, shot about 15GB/2800 actuations, all JPEG (I don't have RAW in my workflow yet, or enough GB for it). Some instances of continuous shooting in AI Servo where it started off completely OOF and reeled itself in - disclaimer though: these shots were of dolphins and whales on the other side of glass (obviously). IIRC, all shots with center AF point selected only. Tons of great results, far better (and far more fun!) than my Rebel XTi.

A brief cycling ride this morning. While standing in the parking lot, I photographed several other riders in the street and in the parking lot. One instance of a continuous sequence has three sequential shots with the subject OOF, but upon closer inspection the center focus point wasn't on him. Subject tracking sensitivity was on #4 (between normal and fast); the first shot with the cyclist back in the center focus point appears to be in focus on the money. Backlit background (highway overpasses in sunlight), dim foreground (park 'n ride lot under the overpasses).

I'm VERY happy with the camera, but not willing to bless it as problem-free. Operator error is definitely a possibility for any and all issues, so I do have more work to do.

Just had 1.1.1 loaded onto my 1DmarkIII. I was at AJ Purdy Canon Day and the CPS guy kindly loaded it on for me.. It will be available via download at the end of the month but may well be 1.1.2..
It does address AF issues and the err99 that 1.1.0 caused for some people.. He was not forthcoming on other or specific detail..

CPS = Canon professional Services

& no you can not go into a shop and get it done. He did say that if you take your camera to CPS at Elstree they will upload 1.1.1 for you.

Just as a side note he did say that a known issue for err99 was the magnets that hold the mirror up can get a film on them that stops them working properly. This film comes from the vapour of the glue used to mount the magnets but would be apparent as a problem from day 1 of ownership.

I'm not sure if it's posted on the previous thread. But for the Osaka thingy that was said to have firmware ver 1.1.1 tested.

The below gallery photos gave partial exif intact (I extracted it using Firefox Exif reader plugin) Some keywords was tagged with 1Dm3.
http://osaka2007.iaaf.org/photo/gallery.html#browse (external link)

My take is that since those sports shooters did not outright "abandon" the 1Dm3 at such an event and are still able to take sharp photos as and when the photographer wants, I believe that the cam is still useable.

However, I did still rejected the 1D3 when they tried to sell me at USD4700

Great news. I'm looking forward to your comments on it's effectiveness (if you had problems before).

Peter, I had a few AF problems last weekend, bright sunlight, semi backlit with my 300mm f/2.8 + 2.0x Extender, its strange though because I used the same combo same shhoting location 3 weeks ago had hardly any OOF shots but the Sun was not as bright and coming from a different direction. I'm going to Donington British Superbikes this weekend so I rang Canon to see if they would load firmware v1.1.1 . They didn't seem to know what I was talking about and said I would have to book the the MKIII in for a service:confused:

Did the Canon guy say what you have to do to get the firmware loaded, i.e. turn up at the door and demand someone loads the firmware:)

Cheers

Well basiclly he said turn up at Elstree and they would load 1.1.1 or you could see if any shops are having a Canon day with a CPS team member there....
