Over the weekend, not only did I get a survey in my email to answer, I also got a phone call from Canon, saying that they knew there was a problem, that problem was with the sub-mirror assembly, and as soon as they figured out how to get cameras in to get repaired, they would contact me...the person that left the message also acknowledged that I had called before...

I just got that email as well !!!!!

I'd sent mine in week before last and it came back, does ok in one shot (only done product shots) and it's great but I'm away in Ireland at weekend for the first round of the Supermoto Winter Series so will give it a whirl at weekend.

Hopefully, Canon UK will contact me and let me know one way or the other.

Carl.

" While they're being a little mysterious about the exact details of the issue and its solution, it will no doubt be reassuring to 1D Mark III owners that the problem has been identified and solved, and to know that Canon will be standing behind the camera with a no-cost, expedited repair plan."

solved hey? until its tested by users its not solved

Particularly when this talk is all about AI-Servo and all my problems have been in one-shot mode....

I've found one shot to be wonky in certain types of lighting, but for me, aiservo probably works better than my oneshot.

I sent mine off two weeks ago after Malla1962 using it on a sunny day at Barrow testing it during a powerboat race day (I was on rescue so couldn't use the camera). And it performed disgracefully. So I packed it off to CPS with a letter, when I got it back the description of the repair was slightly vague to say the least (other than reset/sensor clean) so am going to test it this weekend and hopefully, Canon will ring me and ask for the camera back!

Will keep you posted.
Carl.

Yea, I'm worried about the fix solving some of the issues described in this and the big AF thread. At least as Canon has described the problem/fix.

There is some hope. The Only Some Cameras affected part of the equation, from Canon. There is no doubt, not all of us have the AF problems we've outlined, so there is definitely something wrong with just SOME of the MK-III's. Its still possible "the fix" will address all the issues, given the little detail we have on what Canon actually knows.

I think good chance hardware solves a lot of it, but there still might be some firmware tweaking to do once that's been implemented. I mentioned previously undoing any dumbing-down that might have been put in place, but if the cameras will now be up to spec from a design standpoint, the firmware upgrades can do what they should have done all along - make it better than if there never was a hardware issue.

Now this is interesting, finally one magazine takes up the challange and plasters:-

Canon MKIII is the AF a disaster? On the front cover

http://www.amateurphotographer.co.uk/magazine/current.php (external link)

They found an AF issue and sent the pictures to Canon Europe for comment!

This is a significant step as Canon must pay these guys a lot in advertising revenue

MISSING THE MARK III?
Following recent reports about problems with the AF system of the Canon EOS 1D Mark III, Barney Britton takes another look at Canon's flagship sports DSLR after a firmware upgrade

Sounds like it's not OLD news, but they have a fixed version to test?

I doubt it - there's a good couple of months lead time involved there between testing, writing, printing and distributing the magazine.

:) Cool! :)

Since it's been announced/supposedly fixed they can do it without incurring the full wrath of Canon advertising-wise.
