I keep fearing we will have a rash of Canon executive suicides.

And that would be a bad thing because???:lol::lol:

They would be replaced by newbies without this very embarrassing experience to keep them honest ... remember, "Experience is what we get when we don't get what we want."

Oh Geez, it IS the settings.. we were wrong all along .. (and now Canon is too) :lolL

That article would seriously have fit in just fine, in early August!

I just can't keep from wondering though, just exactly what application did the designers have in mind to take full advantage of the "focus anywhere but where the single active AF point is currently located" CF Settings?
What particular shooting style does this work for?

so is it safe to say when we see this guy we can smack him about a little?

I have read this report in full, and TBH his final word, does not relate to his report at all.

Considering his subjects, and the constant speed and distance he shot over that they were traveling, it should have been easy to track and keep in focus the tram, and to get 20-30 frame burst with only 3 or 4 unusable images is a joke, what ever the camera is set at.

70% success rate again for me is not acceptable at 10 FPS on such a constant target in any light

it looks like he wrote his final words to please Canon, and not to give an honest opinion of his report.

One thing I did notice on my MK3, as all MK3's the centre AF spot is much smaller than my 40D, so harder to keep it locked centrally to your target, for me this could be a start of many problems with the AF system, but I dont care what anyone says, if you select centre AF point only it should keep in Focus and track what ever you point that AF on and it does not.

:) Cool! :)

Since it's been announced/supposedly fixed they can do it without incurring the full wrath of Canon advertising-wise.

KAC

This is why I think printed media is rubbish - they rely on advertising revenue and this (in a capitalistic system) will surely influence their reviews. I'd rather investigate products using the www, generaly much more accurate reading end users reports.

"However, taken as a whole..."

Good grief!

This reminds me of another lame review from a photography magazine.

"There's been some online chatter about flaws and failures of the autofocusing system on the Mark III, but we did not experience any of these problems in our field tests with a variety of Canon and third-party lenses, regardless of the autofocusing method. Whether we tried shutter-button focus, AF-button focus, single-focusing point focus, or expanded focusing point focus, the AF speed and tracking worked equally well and quickly found our subjects in bright light and low light." --Jack Howard, American Photo

More hard-core testing from the pros at the top.

Y'all should invite the Britons, Howards, and their ilk to this forum to get educated!

R/C

P.S. Has any photo magazine done a solid review of the Mk III?

P.P.S. Jack said he did a "full lab test." He's full of it.

I think the point to note is the impact it has. Having Canon and AF disaster on the front of the magazine has a HUGE impact to all potential customers...Canon would be very 'Red Faced' by this very public statement, the Japanese will not like this kind of public humiliation at all and it can only increase the drive to fix this quickly

That is if they believe there is a problem. Don't take this the wrong way, but there is not much talk of AF problems over here in the photography community. I am not saying it is all in everyones head, but I am wondering why this is the case?

So why are Canon trying to fix it, and why is this recall happening, having a few firmware issues is one thing but to find a fault Hardware and do a recall, etc. is another.

I think there is a problem, I own one, and Myself not happy with the AF overall, as well as servo tracking, my 40D has a higher keeper rate than my Mk3 for in focus shots.
I have the settings set to Canon recommendations, and the slowest setting in the AI server sensitivity.

I believe there is too, but none of this recalling is happening here, well I have not heard about and I have around quite a bit now. Are the cameras in the US made in the same factories as the Japan MKIII's?

That article is funny, I just talked to a canon rep and he acknowledged the problem and explained some things about it and is sending me a shipping label to repair it, so...if there is no problem, why would it be acknowledged?

Sure, I'd start it out,

Well Barney Fife, is that really your Last Word? HeheheHe

tried, but not very hard. If one is going to call themselves a journalist, one should do a little research, which means this Forum is a must considering it is the largest Canon Forum in the world! A glance here, as well as to a few of the links here to qualified photogs who had scientific style tests proving the problem was/is real would have convinced Mr. Fife that there are at least a few people who "appear" to have a problem with the M3's AF for one reason or another!

As for what I have said all along about Canon's mismanagement of all of this, I feel vindicated that everything I predicted, or almost everything I said about Canon's strategy were on target. Ah heck, I'm tired and this will look stupid in the morning. All I mean to say is that a few people got it right, and a few like Barney got it wrong, and Canon sucked.
