mmm.im hoping all this will work out good, sounds like canon have found a fix,but I cant keep wondering if this fix is actually gonna sort it.
shouldnt we have heard from at least someone who had the latest hardware inserteted and tested it??
seems like canon have had time to get at least a few bodies out to be tested ,but no news.
what gives?
personally I bought the camera for other reasons than just AF alone but shouldnt some news be out yet?
Im sure many others who are anxious to see if "sub mirrror assembly"is the fix are more than wondering too?;)

First announcements in Europe ...Canon acknowledge there is an issue with the MK III focus and have called registered customers to announce a re-call program in the UK...boy I thought it was just a US issue because we had a different plug socket and the US ran on 1110v...how wrong I was..seems like the problem is the same with 240v!!!

To think of the response we got after the US announced the issue...boy puts Canon in the Amateur support stakes as well as in Amateur photogrpaher...thank goodness for Barney he saved us all here in Blighty:-)

Now what will Canon Europe say now that Canon UK has defected???

you mean they are calling all registered customers or those whose camera falls within a target group? They haven't phoned me anyway.

This will only apply to the UK but it was posted on another forum i belong to for Canon Pro users and contains part of a quote given to pro dealers regarding UK MKIII's.

Quote:

Dear all, I have just received an e-mail, via a trusted source about the 1D Mk.III. It contains "DEALER" instructions about the Mk.III recall and I cannot publish all of it but I will publish the areas that matter to you.

Quote:

We would like to make you aware that we have concluded that there is a quality issue with some EOS-1D Mark III units in the market. The problem can be linked to the adjustment of the AF Sub Mirror, and we believe that this affects only a minority of units in the market at this time.

The phenomenon resulting from this problem (especially in high temperature) is that the optimal focus point is uncertain in AI servo mode, or that the tracking performance of AI Servo is not accurate.

Regarding the products that have been sold to consumers, we are currently preparing a resolution for this issue and will inform you of further detailed information and required steps through our official website at the end of October or the beginning of November. Canon will accept these units for repair, but we will not be offering an exchange or return.

As of today we are taking end-user inquiries with the above information through our Technical Help Desk on 08705 143 723. If you get an inquiry from an end-user, please advise them to contact this number until such time that the official website announcement has been published.

End of Quote

The bottom line now is please be patient with both your local dealer and Canon and ONLY use the above number for enquiries.

End of Quote

Hope this helps and clears things up a bit for people in the UK

Sorry this may be repetative -

Has anyone reported on having purchased a Mark III recently that has the sub mirror assembly problem already adjusted? Are they having any issues?

I just got my return packet this week and I'm just curious...

The shameful thing is that Chuck W is left out there as a lone guy World-Wide representing an issue that is effecting all MK III customers

Hello again,

Message for Anke, on page 57 -

We've heard nothing from Canon UK yet - I spoke to someone within Canon Europe late on Friday (UK time). Apparently we should wait for an official response some time in the next week or two, and that, as they say, is all he wrote, for the time being... (Another forum user has already posted the link to the news item I wrote about it, so I won't incur the wrath of the moderators by posting it again here.)

We'll get back on the case on Monday morning, and obviously AP will post more news as soon (or if) we get it.

Thanks again to everyone that has replied to these posts and contacted me since I joined the forum. Much appreciated. (I'll be back!)

Erp!

So was mine - and predated the review...

That's because of article lead times. We don't write a test the week the relevant issue hits the newsstands, but some time beforehand ;)

A point I've tried to get them to understand . . . But if it happens instantly on the Web, it must also happen instantly on printed publications, too. BTDT.

On a personal note, tonight we have the first ever US performance of a Chinese opera on my stage..
After spending the day doing set up of stage equipment, I decided to take some pics during the quick sound check.. all seemed fine but something was not right..
Then as the performance started I thought I'd try and get some wing shots of the lovely ladies in there amazing bright costumes under the performance light..
Finally I saw what was off, despite the fact that the little green viewfinder LCD told me center AF point "sel []" top be exact, the af point lit was decidedly OFF Center..

So I scrolled through the AF points, and lit up RING OF FIRE to see, and the entire focus point oval is now off center by a good margin,. up and to the right?

I guess maybe my own sub mirror assembly has started to fall off kilter? or is this something entirely different.

Sounds like your 1D3's gotten disoriented.

Hello everyone,
.... but in the final analysis I did all I could, and I hope people reserve their ire for Canon.

I've had that problem with my Mark II, the AF "led unit" (or something like that) was not properly in it's holder (it's located inside the top bulge) and when I titled the camera AF lights moved. The lights are for display only and they do not affect the real AF point. It was fixed by Canon.
