Maybe. But, do you think that helps resale? I know if I was buying a used 1d, I'd look at the serial number range, and avoid the problem cameras. Sure, someone will buy it, but at a discount over any cameras built after October.

I already did this once. I got one of the very low serial numbers and jumped ship with a new one, selling the old one for full MSRP, back when that was a deal (took needless crap from a couple dudes here for my price ) It would have been a great move, but as we were all yelling wolf, Canon continued the assembly line and remained quiet that there was even a problem, so almost three months into this fiasco, I bought new and still get new enough, as Canon made the decision that they would roll out the same camera and try to find a fix later, betting, I'm sure, that firmware would do it. Several here speculated well that firmware would NOT fix this issue. Oh yeah, Canon did imply over and over that it was the custom functions STUPID!

I wrote Canon last night requesting a refund and or credit towards a 1Ds M3, of course, this will be the first step of many, as at the customer rep level they won't have the juice to find out, or will simply quote current rules, or even give the same old standby, wait and see how Canon will roll out the recall. Of course we were told the recall info and the simple test would all be up by the end of October. What is today's date. Nice job Canon, you incompetents! Lots of heads should be rolling, or maybe a few knives being handed out for some people do do the honorable thing. ;)

Well, if the fix works I'm not intending to sell my 1DIII for a long time so in that regard second hand value is a moot point for me. Its value will be determined by its age, overall shape and recent service history rather than whether it's been recalled a couple of years back. It will likely become a backup/second body some day when the 1D Mark X is here anyway. :)

I think you are absolutely right. Those holding on to it for say four or five years it probably won't matter at all. It will probably be those who buy every cycle or two that will take the bite. All just guessing on my part, but I think it is an educated guess with some reasonable logic. Since I am in the group who holds and sells every few years, I am not happy about that. BUT, my biggest disgust is the closed mouth way Canon has tried to seep this under the rug. They have shown their true colors over this. Just think if this had just been a couple of thousand cameras out of the lot. They would have continued to tell people to adjust their Cfns and live with it.

Dealing with Canon is like getting a straight answer out of some of the presidential candidates.

And the Canon-bashing and hand-wringing is back at full song.

Does anyone else notice that this thread is starting to look more and more like the old one?

Those of you who have a low opinion of Canon over this are clearly on record. Your disappointment and frustrations have been noted, recorded, marked on the wall, etched into our skulls, and otherwise preserved for posterity.

We all understand that Canon has been removed from your Christmas card list. We get it.

Can we go back to interesting, useful information that actually benefits the people who take the time to read this?

I like being able to check the serial number range as some indication of whether the unit might be a problem one or not. I'd really like to know the serial number before they ship it to me, to avoid having to return it and get another one shipped. There's probably no way to find this out from someplace like Amazon. I guess a phone order to B&H or buying from a camera store, you could make sure of the serial number before it is shipped to you. Is that what most people will do...or just wait a while before ordering?

Yep, and as stated here, this will give the Mark III the Scarlet Letter for a very long time. They need a IIIN next year. Prices have already dropped considerably on the used market, who wants to buy a recall? Canon can do better right now and still pull out of this.

That is exactly what we don't want, as that would really mess up the MK3 2nd hand market, what we want is this fix to work, end of

Yep, as my last sentence said, Canon can still pull this off. proper fix is secondary to coming clean with a full explanation and apology and a promise as to how they will do better in the future. The loss in confidence for canon is a much greater issue than a fix on an AF system.
