First of all have you noticed consistant mis-focused pictures using the lens in question?

Need a little more info to help you out. You can start by naming the issue you are having follow that up with some info about your shooting style and lastly you could let people know the equipment you are using.

You can test for front and back focus problems with a focusing chart. Beyond that little tid bit I can't help much at this point, sorry.

I personally use the "real world test"...I buy a lens and start using it. It should be apparent if there are any issues with the pics. Personally, I'm not really concerned if my lenses front/rear focus a millimeter or two if it isn't apparent in my "real world" photos. Only if my lenses are showing a consistant focus problem in my photos would I resort to test charts and setting up batteries. Of course, others do the opposite....shooting test charts and batteries before introducing the lens to the "real world". There's really no right or wrong but IMO...test charts lead to early hair loss ;)

OK I just realized that you might be looking for definitions of the terms. In that case....

Front focus - When the lens' actual focus point is in front of the intended target. In front meaning spatially closer to the camera and lens system.

Back focus - When the lens' actual focus point is behind the intended target. Behind meaning .... see above.

If you do not see consistently out of focus pictures, I wouldn't worry about. You may just need a little more time with the camera.

Hope I got it right this time;),
Travis
