Another question about Lens Choice...

I currently have an XTi. I will be purchasing a 40D in a few months. For now, I am trying to create a decent Lens Line up.
Here is what I currently have.

#1 Canon Kit Lens - 18-55mm f3.5 - 5.6
#2 Canon 50mm 1.8
#3 Sigma 55-200 f4 - 5.6
#4 Canon 70-200mm f2.8L IS

I am considering buying one more lens to complete my lineup for weddings. I understand pros here consider only #4 to be of real value. S condering the crop bodies which one of the following should I get?

17-55mm 2.8 IS - Should I worry that I do not have the range covered between 55mm and 70mm? How important is that range now a days?

24-70mm 2.8L. With this choice I get an L lense and full coverage, but I lose wider angle and IS. How importance are the later two consider the difference between these two lenses?

One last thing, which lens would you use on which body of the two I mentioned.

I definitely think you'll find the wider angle and IS to be very valuable on the 17-55IS.

If I were you I'd put the bigger lens on the bigger body and the smaller lens on the smaller body.

17-55IS, definitely. And I'd use it on the 40D, since the majority of your shots will be with the wide angle lens.

The 24-70 is far from wide enough on a 1.6 crop. Heck, I don't find it wide enough on a 1.3 crop!!

17-55 is the perfect range on a 1.6

I NEVER missed the 56-69 range between the two lenses. You probably won't even notice it.

I agree. Sell the Sigma and 18mm kit lens and get a 17-55mm (definately) and a 24-105mm (if mostjobs are outdoors or good lighting) or 24-70mm. (if most are low light)

I agree with all posters above.
Sell the Kit and Sigma.

Get the 17-55 for sure for the 1.6 crops.
17-55 + 70-200 2.8 is all you need to shoot.
Then if you REALLY need 55-70 range, sell your 50 and grab a 60mm macro you'll get the range you want and have macro for any ring/detail work.

Agree with getting the 17-55 F2.8 IS but dont sell your kit lens, keep it as a backup for when all else fails, 17-55 range is gonna be your most used lens so you need something to fall back on just in case.

I do plan to keep my kit as well as sigma. They are small enough to just leave them in camera bag but if needed they can be my backup from 18-200mm. Plus I am not sure if I will get much by selling them and trying to buy some other replacement.

I carry the 24-70 on one camera and the 70-200 on another along with the fishey and a few other backup equip in my bag. 24-70 can get u some real nice shots.

Yup, what Lloyd said. I've never missed that range either. I probably get 95% of my shots with the 17-55 and the balance with the 70-200. Every once in a while, I'll find a need to pull out the 10-22 - but that's mostly for fun once I have the required shots in the can and can play a little bit.

17 - 55 IS would be a better choice coz like what lloyd said, 24 - 70 is not that wide on a 1.6 crop. but if you are planning to get an UWA lens in the near future, then go get the 24 - 70 so you won't have that much of an overlap (10 - 20/22 and 17 - 55 compared to 10 - 20/22 and 24 - 70)

I think the overlap is good. I'll bet many will find they use 17-20mm a LOT, and about 35mm a lot, and 55mm a lot. If you are relying on an ultrawide to give you that 17-20 range, you're gonna be switching lenses a LOT. Some don't mind this... I can't stand it. Something always happens right when you think it's safe to switch lenses.
