Hey Guys

Just wondering before I do anything. Weather I should get a better body or lens? As of now I just have a Xti with a kit lens. I was going to get a 24-70 f/2.8L, I was thinking weather I should get this or a better body.

Cheers

Lens first for sure, use the better lens now, up date your body later. the run life of a lens is a lot longer than a body.

Ditto.
Considered the EF-S 17-55 2.8 IS USM? About the same money as the 24-70, and it will blow your kit lens away completely, while the 24-70 may be a little long at 24. The loss of 55-70 may not be that big of a deal. Depends on what you shoot, I guess.
Just a thought.

Hi

Xarqi, I am planning to on FF later on so I would be better off buying EF lenses. I would like the 24-70 for a versatile lens a portrait one.

Cheers

I have the 17-55 IS and 24-70 L and the former is a better lens in IQ terms, but also there is very little in it frankly. Most wouldn't notice. The IS is very good as a travel and walkaround lens. The L has better build by far and if you are going full frame anytime soon is the better choice. Meantime, you've lost the wide end which is very often used in my experience in city/walkaround shooting. I'd go IS and then sell later if the FF is longer into your future: more bang for your buck for sure on a crop. I would prefer a good prime or two for portraits.

how long is "later on" ?
if youre gonna stick with a crop body for like a year+ then i would still get the 17-55IS. its just a great all-round lens for a crop (IS, sharpppp, the 17mm FL comes in handy..) . it is the best tool for what you need NOW. then when u actually go FF, then sell it (pretty good 2nd hand market for these) .

That makes good sense in that case.

Have you considered the 24-105L IS? Its in the same price range as the other two and would give you a longer zoom range, especially if you are interested in more portrait stuff, but you would have to be willing to forgo the 17-23mm range... but hey alot of people still shoot 28mm (on the wide end) lenses on their crop bodies, i did for a long time, didn't hurt too bad

Definently buy some lenses first! :D Then when you have enough for what you like to shoot, you should maybe get a better body if you need it.

basically you have no glass. nada. Forget the body for now. You won't see any worthwhile improvements. Think GLASS and LIGHT. Get a 580EX II or at least a 430EX. get a 50mm f/1.4 if you want a portrait lens. Get the 24-70 f/2.8 L if you want a brick to intimidate your subjects :P. Get a 85mm f/1.8. or a 70-200. Anything is better then a new body at this point given your current kit.

Glass always wins this argument. I love my 24-105L IS. You could always pick up a 10-22 for the wide stuff.

Glass won the argument with me also. I was thinking of either a new 5D or the 85L f/1.2, and the new lens won (expecting it on Monday woohoo!) and early next year I will consider purchasing the 5D.

I was faced with same dilema recently - chose to upgrade to a mid range L zoom instead of a new body. Glad I did.

Lens will last me 10+ years.
