What body are you looking at?

Hey

I am looking at getting the 5D in the feature. As for now I just have an Xti.

basically you have no glass. nada. Forget the body for now. You won't see any worthwhile improvements. Think GLASS and LIGHT. Get a 580EX II or at least a 430EX. get a 50mm f/1.4 if you want a portrait lens. Get the 24-70 f/2.8 L if you want a brick to intimidate your subjects :P. Get a 85mm f/1.8. or a 70-200. Anything is better then a new body at this point given your current kit.

Hey

When I get my lens I am really getting the 580 ex as well to... One question would my dad's spare nikon flashguns work with 580 as a slave?

Glass won the argument with me also. I was thinking of either a new 5D or the 85L f/1.2, and the new lens won (expecting it on Monday woohoo!) and early next year I will consider purchasing the 5D.

Hey

You must be so excited in getting that lens. Maybe I would do that too and make the body go on later on :p

Have you considered the 24-105L IS? Its in the same price range as the other two and would give you a longer zoom range, especially if you are interested in more portrait stuff, but you would have to be willing to forgo the 17-23mm range... but hey alot of people still shoot 28mm (on the wide end) lenses on their crop bodies, i did for a long time, didn't hurt too bad

Yeah I have compared them. But I like the 2.8 more :D

Cheers

how long is "later on" ?
if youre gonna stick with a crop body for like a year+ then i would still get the 17-55IS. its just a great all-round lens for a crop (IS, sharpppp, the 17mm FL comes in handy..) . it is the best tool for what you need NOW. then when u actually go FF, then sell it (pretty good 2nd hand market for these) .

Maybe a year or two... Until my family and friends really get impressed with the pictures I take.

Cheers

If it's a whole year or two, get a 17-55. Don't just hold back on EF-S because you're gonna go FF 'sometime in the future' if it's not exactly near. You'd be losing out on precious photo opportunities.. unless of course, you'd prefer the 24-70 range on crops.

If you buy a 5D, you're going to need a lens as well. The xti kit lens won't work on that baby... So your question should have been new body & lens or just new lens :)

j/k.. anyway, my choice would be the glass

I would get lenses first to the point that you can actual use the lenses with the body you plan on getting.

Like literally everyone else has said, upgrade the lens first. The XTi is capable of stunning images with the right glass.

Only in straight manual, and it'd probably mess up trying to use the 580EX in E-TTL too.

Definitely invest in glass first. I bought my first L glass when I was still shooting film. The 20D didn't come until later.
