I have a rebel xti and want to upgrade and I am torn between the 5D or the 30D. I mostly shoot portrait, some wedding but mostly portrait outdoors. Any pros and cons on both cameras would be helpful!!

The 5D would be your best option, due to the superior image quality and performance at high ISO's.

If money is no object and you shoot mostly portraits, 5D would be the best option.

Thanks for the comments so far. What kind of an upgrade do you think the 30D is from the rebel xti?

Personaly I have no experience with the xti but do own a 20D and have just added a 5D body.
Seeing as the 30D is not far off from the 20D spec wise ,I can tell you that using the 5D after coming from the 20D is like the difference between night and day for me personaly.
The only thing I did find is that if you have cheap lenses then it would pay to upgrade those as well (think L) as the 5D realy does show all the flaws of cheaper glass.
So if L glass is not in your budget then I would think a 30D might be your better option.

If you're thinking about the 30D, I'd recommend the 40D instead.

correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the 5D have a full-frame sensor, so you will have to get all new glass for it, whereas if you go with the 40D, you can use all your existing lenses from the XTi? If that's the case, I would stay with the 40D, unless you really have an endless supply of money and want to upgrade everything...

Agree with this too. Unless you already have a good range of full frame (EF NOT EF-s) lenses I would stick with the 40D. Or if you have the money to spend then go with 5D and plan on throwing alot more down afterwards.

No, that's not necessily the case. Unless she has all crop lens now (which is highly unlikely) her current lens will will work better on the full frame 5D. I owned three crop bodies prior to upgrading to the 5D and never owned a crop lens. All of my lens now give the the POV they were designed for.

40D and Glass. Why get a 5D when the replacement is on the way and you'll regret it? ;)

Personally I'd get the 5D, I've been drooling for the 5D for MONTHS myself, I'm probably a year from getting one myself. Lucky dog!

reefergal,

I don't even want to ask about your name (geneologies can get so messy), but --

Can you afford a 5D? I have never heard a 5D owner say that they wish they had a different camera for portrait use. They just enthuse. I'm not a portrait shooter, but I do have a 5D, and can understand the quality issue/enthusiasm.

So, get what you can afford -- if you can afford a 5D I think it's safe to say you won't regret it!

Tony

The name comes from that my husband and I own and operate a commercial refrigeration company. His screen name on Turbo Bricks was reeferman so I thought being the wife reefergal fit. We have both decided we should change our screen names for obviouse reasons. anyway, I can afford a 5D when your spending a grand allready what is a few more hundred? (in this case anyway) I don't want to spend that kind of money on the 30D and then wish I had spent a little more and got the 5D. I have been looking at photos on the this forum and noticeing what camera they are shot with and for my needs I am thinking the 30D, but I will check into the 40D as well. I realy like getting input from lots of dif. people who use the dif. bodies for dif. things such as portrait, wedding, action. I did not think about having to get new glass along with a new camera. New glass was not in the budget.
