I have a 20D that's about 4 years old. I've had this occasionally happen, but it happened a few times today, the camera doesn't come back to life after the auto power off timer goes off. Sometimes I have to remove the battery and reinstall to get the camera to come back to life. Is this a normal thing or is there something else going on here?

That is definitely not normal behavior and it should be fixed.
First thing that comes to mind is corroded contacts in battery compartment.
Did you try another battery?

Visually, the contacts look ok (first thing I checked). Is there something out there that could be used to clean them?

There is some special fluid for contacts cleaning, but for now try rubbing them with pencil eraser.
Clean contacts on the battery, too.
Other than that, I have no idea what to do, short of sending it to Canon repair facility.

Definitely not something my getting-old 20D does! If it's a bother and you can spare the camera for a while I'd be sending it off to get looked at...

I'm waiting on the "new" 5D before I pick up a new body, so this is the only one I currently have. Might have to break down though, if this gets worse.
