Afternoon folks

I am looking for some extra reach and have tried a sigma 2x and its a waste of time. My problem is I cant afford a longer lens being a student so I thought about stacking 1.4s

I already have the Canon and the reason I mentioned the kenko is it is non-protruding and I can get it. I know there is also the Tamron but we cant get it over here.

Has anyone tried stacking 1.4s on a 300f4IS?

Thanks

Neil

Not a good idea, my 300/4 IS is not bad with the EF 2X II, the main obstacle being getting accurate focus manually, particularly with moving subjects like birds. But if you get good focus then the IQ is very reasonable.

Obviously you need to be a lot more careful with vibration and shutter speed also, more so than you would think by just doubling the focal length.

I though the Sigma TCs had a good rep, or is this a cheaper variant?

right here (the kenko is very similar to the tamron)

I did it for the test (in the above link) but have never used this combination in actual shooting.

Thanks guys

Results dont look too bad David, certainly better than what I was getting with the siggy 2x. Has anyone used the combo in actual shooting?

Thanks

Neil

Not the best shot ever, it was overcast and pretty dark but this is the only time I've used the stacked 1.4s (Canon + Kenko Pro) on my 300F4L.

ISO 640, F/11, 1/250th, 100% crop.

I have the same combo like colin: Ef 300 + Kenko x1,4 300 DG Pro and I am very happy:

but don´t go further than from the Ef 300 + one x1,4 TC, the lens it will hunt a lot and you can blow up something with so many times going forth & back ... but it´s at your risk.

Same with the x2 TC, I have just try a couple of time but the IQ suffers also, only in the central part of the image is useful, borders are disapointing, but still you can used it for some shoots like moon shoots ...

Cheers
Juan

If anyone is looking for a 300mm f/4 IS USM lens I have one for sale here.

Also have a 1.4x Kenko Pro TC but its not listed in the thread.

https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=396054

I just don't use it, time to let it go.
