I'm going to be buying one in a couple months, I just want to hear people's opinions.

Is there a big difference between the two lenses? I just don't want to pay $300 more if it's minimal.

How's the contrast, IQ, build, etc., between the two?

I'll be using it for sports photography in low light:shock::)

Thanks
-Max

Which of the four Canon 70-200mm's are you comparing ?

I directly compared the EF f/2.8L IS to the SIGMA EX
I preferred the Sigma's weight and ergonomics. (and price!)

The Canon had faster AF and better tracking with the bodies I tried it on (10D and 1D at the time) and the Canon was sharper wide open.
By f/4 they seemed very similar.

I love IS but could take it or leave it at this focal length for most shooting.

It now occurs to me after typing this I may have done a side by side comparison at the time. I'll try and find it.

A vote for the Canon

If the AF and tracking are better you will need that edge for available light work.

And I love mine--the most used lens in the house and the one we are the most satisfied with.

so how it performs at f/2.8 is important and if its AF is suitable

I bought a Sigma 70-200 F2.8 EX, APG what ever it was, used it one nite and took it back and paid the extra for the 70-200L F2.8 IS, and never regretted the price difference once.

Check out and consider the 70-200 2.8 IS reviews at photozone.de. The FOURTH lens was a "good" one. Read good, not great.
I've got the 2.8 IS on order, should be here Wednesday. I can't do a side by side but I'll gladly post my versus feelings after I get it.
My 70-200 has treated me very well.
RonaldS Jr has a used APO HSM for sale in the used section, the sharper of the two Sigma versions.
