Well I see the advantages of an XTI, but can't speak from personal experience. However my XT has served me well in figuring out the DSLR world I have loved every minute of it. I have outgrown mine so if you decide you want the XT, you can buy mine! Maybe then I could convince my husband to let me buy the 40D. Pm me if your interested!!!

I vote for the xt and save the money for glass. You'll find yourself drooling at the big 2.5"er when someone's chimping next to you with one. It's a good test of one's mental strength to be able to think about anything else for the rest of the day. Actually, the screen might be worth it. Glass is nice too, though......:confused:

Still rockin the silver xti

Methinks somebody needs to refresh their acquaintance with Rule 4.9.

If you don't want to be helpful, just don't say anything.

I was being helpful...by explaining that there were already many points of view available for OP if he cared to research...

If you take the time to do a search on this and other Canon forums you'll find PAGES answering your question.

Then I suggest you review the rules you agreed to abide by when you signed up here. Rule 4.9 states

If you know an answer to a question either answer it or say nothing. Giving newbies blunt answers like "search the forum" is not allowed - please use the typing effort to giving the answer instead. Or just give the link to that post you wished the newbie should have searched for. Respect newbies - you were a newbie once.

Highly consider a used set up from this site. You'll save money, and most sellers here (I'm making this assumption) are friendly, helpful, and honest.

Here are some searches you can use to help answer your questions:

Reading the various posts from these websites' archives is invaluable in that will give you answers to questions you may want to ask but don't even know of yet. I found that just reading about others' experiences taught me more than I would have learned if I just asked questions as they just came to mind.
Different websites have different "personalities" and characters...and all are populated by people who are passionate about Canons...
good luck and enjoy whichever camera you get...and my apologies for not understanding the rules...

I currently own the XT and its a camera that I highly recommend for people just starting out in the SLR world. One reason I chose the XT over the XTI is the secondary LCD display. For me, that's a must have. Overall, the XT is a great camera and for the price its amazing. The XTI does have better technologies built-in. My vote goes to the XT for the one reason above. It's all up to personal preference though. Hope this helps!

That's funny, after using the XTi for ~10 months, there's no way in hell I'd go back to using a secondary LCD. To have all of the shooting info printed brightly on a 2.5" screen is a godsend.

To the OP, if you can afford the XTi, go for it. The AF is faster and more accurate (especially with 2.8 lenses), the buffer is bigger, the LCD screen is a huge improvement, you don't have to specifically exit out of the menus for the changes to be implemented (you can just hit the shutter release button and you're good to go) and of course more MP and the "dust shaker". The last two aren't as big of a deal to me, but everything before it is. Especially the AF, I'd almost pay the $160 extra just for that.

As long as you can afford at least decent glass (Sigma 18-50, 17-70, Tamron 17-50, Canon 17-85, etc), go for it. If not, I'd say save the almost $200 (buydig.com has the XT for $429, brand new) and go for a better lens, you'll appreciate it more.

:)

I own both, having owned the XT for 2 years and XTi for 3 weeks. I went last weekend and shot about 200 images with the XTi (first time really using it). I noticed the XTi focused in low light better than my XT. This is the only significant difference I've identified at this point (and my main reason for the upgrade).

Unless you have a real need to shoot low light, the XTi will not offer a significant advantage over the XT. As Dave Kadolph said, applying the price difference to better glass would be wise.

I doubt you'll have any real regrets going with one over the other.

Kevin
