Joann's has both the Nylon Ripstop and the Sport Ripstop. Both are available in black and white and they are the same price.

The nylon ripstop is lighter in weight and has an embedded gid for strength. The pattern does not transfer as light shines through it. It weights less and there is a very slight difference in the quality of light. The difference is not a 'good or bad' thing, it's just a slight difference in the diffused light.

Yep, you are right, they do have both. I do remember looking at both now. But I can't remember now why I chose sport over the nylon though, oh well, LOL.
What do you use Robert?

Hi Randy,

My diffusion panel is a modified version of the LightingMagic panel. The diffusion material is the nylon ripstop but I have a second layer I add that is the sport ripstop.

When it comes to the black ripstop I find that the standard material blocks a bit more light than the black sport ripstop. There are only slight differences.

If I were going to build a panel from scratch I would probably get white sport for the front diffusion panel and standard black for the side panels.

An inspiration. Might have to build one myself.

made a diffusion panel frame based on randy's here...i modified it a little bit. I'm going to make a second one as well later this afternoon...i didn't do the nylon ripstop yet...i bought a white flat bed sheet from walmart for less than $7 (full size). It works pretty good. It's a cheap one so it's not real thick...plus if I get the ripstop later, I can use these as light bouncers...here's a quick pic I took with it...didn't have background set up, nor did I really play with settings and focusing...but you can get the idea....

I see light on the subject(s) but can't really get an idea of much.

It would be better if you took a shot where we could see the panel actually working and how well it works.

HaHa, I have a life size cutout of Dale Jr. I have it standing next to the front door. Scares the crap out of people when they walk in. :)

looks good.

I use a Calumet P-22, cost about $100 and uses light stands to hold it, but same idea. Very versatile device, can be used to diffuse light or even shade the sun off the subject.

another test shot with both panels...panels were about 5ft away...didn't play with settings too much and it is slightly out of focus...but you can get the general idea...did no photoshop to this file except resizing and saving from RAW to JPG...

Hey, I have that same stool!

Looks good. So you have two sets of lights, one behind each panel?

I usually have my panels and strobes as close as I can without being in the frame. I put the light about 2' behind
the panel. You can play with that though and see what you like.
