So I took a picture of my dog as you can see below. I turned on the focus points for you.

When I look at the picture of his face it looks out of focus, but the blades of grass under his noise and belly area look more in focus. Is it just me or does my camera have the front/back focus problem. I am shooting with the kit lense. Below is a link to the full size picture which shows it more easily

The grass is in focus because it lies on the plane that you focused on. The dogs snout does not look that OOF but it's hard to tell because the fur is over exposed.

Could this be a DOF issue? The aperture was 4.5.

Why a 10mg image?
Seems in focus to me...I mean, the whiskers and tongue are as sharp as the grass under the pooch...what is your concern?

Looks fine. Might need to understand a little more about DOF and the distance your subject is at vs. the focal length.

Start shooting lots and learn, you'll have fune...

The focus seems fine. The area at the focus point is acceptably sharp and sharper than anything else. The softness in the rest of the picture is depth of field related.

To me it looks like a typically soft kit lens. If you take the lens and stop down to f8 or so, you will most likely end up with much sharper images. It's not a great for everything, but in great lighting it will be just fine.

Donte,

After looking at the large version, I'd agree that the nose portion is nicely in focus (look at the white hairs sticking out)! The problem you're seeing is that you really want at least the whole face to be in focus, which would require a smaller aperture -- how much smaller would depend on how much you wanted to appear reasonably sharp and how far away you are from the dog.

Someone mentioned the fact that kit lenses and other expensive lenses tend to be soft, especially at extremes of length and apertures. That's true, but in those cases one has to learn to be a little aggressive in PP sharpening techniques.

Hope this helps!

Tony

Thanks guys for all the info. I am still very green to photography so if you see me asking some stupid question then you know why. I have a lot to learn, but that's why I came here. I really value your guy’s expert opinions.

There are no stupid questions... Only stupid people...

Of course the stupid people rarely bother asking questions. ;)
