Monitor calibration advice?

Hello,

Just writing to ask if anybody has any advice on which monitor calibration device and software to purchase. I have never done this before, and I don't think I need to go crazy with it, but I definitely need to do something. I have recently purchase the 1D Mark III and the images look incredible on the LCD. But when dragged into my HP 17" brightscreen laptop, they look blue and magenta, as well as overly bright. I am getting a little nervous because I have a wedding to shoot on November 3.

Any advice would be extremely helpful,
Thanks,
Keith

I use Spyder2PRO. It seems to do the job.

All the gear and no idea.

Depends on how much you want to spend. I calibrate using the Huey (around $80), but there is also the Huey Pro ($100), Spyder 2 Suite and Pantone EyeOne LT($125-150) and the Pantone EyeOne Pro2 and Spyder2Pro (arond $200). Basically as you progress you get more feature rich software (often the actual "pucks" are the same, just better options like dual monitors, kelvin settings, printer calibration, kinda, (only the really, really expensive ones give you true printer calibration), etc. Like I said, I use the regular huey and what I see on my screen and on my prints matches pretty much dead on. They will all pretty much do "plug and play" type calibration, but If you run dual monitors or if you want a lot of control over your calibration, I would recommend either of the PRO versions listed above.

Laptop screens are notorious for their poor rendition. Some people claim that even after calibration they're only barely usable. Many are difficult or impossible to calibrate with inexpensive calibrators like the huey—if you're going to calibrate that screen, my suggestion is to go for the Eye One Display 2 because that seems to have the most success with laptop screens.

A wedding would typically be a pretty important shoot, and I'd suggest getting a separate stand-alone monitor to use for the editing. And calibrate it, of course.

EyeOne 2 ... and it has done a great job with a range of laptops too.
