Over the weekend, I picked up a new 5D from Henry's Camera and got a good deal and am now awaited the $740 rebate because I bought it with the battery grip which doubles the rebate on both items! That's the good part.

The issue part is that I seem to be seeing some stuck green and red pixels on longer exposure shots, taken at night off my balcony which gives me a pretty good view of north Toronto and beyond. The noise reduction processing in the supplied software does appear to effectively deal with removing them but I'm not sure if something is simply amiss here with the sensor or if its just a dust issue...I've read that some 5D users experience dust problems with this body?

A second issue is more related to my 17-40 L lens that seems to have a lot more image warp on the outer edges then what I was used to seeing when I had it on my Rebel XT? Is this normal for that lens or do I have a poor copy?

I can supply sample images latter this evening if needed as I'm at work now without access to the files.

Cheers! :)

Hot pixels. I see them on my 5D, especially longer exposure and dark scenes. Not sure if this is normal or not, however I wasn't bothered enough to send it in. Nothing PS cannot handle.

As for your 17-40, well you now actually have 17-40 FOV since your 5D is Full Frame.

That lens on your XT with its 1.6 crop factor had a FOV Equivalent of 27-64.

So your 17-40 is now an ultra-wide lens.(Compare to something like the EF-S 10-22) Distortion is normal for the 17-40 on a 5D.

Samples are needed, but check your shooting angle. A slight upward tilt to the body relative to the subject will increase distortion of vertical lines when shooting the 17-40 on a 5D @ 17mm. You can use this effect to your advantage... and it is visible through the viewfinder.

Reduce the angle to even with your subject and you should reduce the distortion.

Example: Focal plane to subject like this: I I
NOT like this: \ I

I love the 17-40 on my 5D.

All is well. Don't worry. The "hot pixels" come and go. They are eliminated by the Canon software and photoshop automagically. I noticed them when I first bought the 5D, but not since. Each time you remove battery or turn on/off, they seem to go away/change/move or whatever. Just a standard outcome with all high quality sensors.

The image warp on the wide angle is very normal. Same thing you get with "full frame" film cameras. The outer edges were cropped on your XT so you did not see the natural effect of wide angle. You will quickly learn to adjust your shooting to get the desired effect. The warp is quite useful in some types of shots, in others you you might decide to zoom in a tiny bit or crop the photo in software later.

Don't worry. In about 2 or 3 weeks you will marvel that you once thought your XT was a decent camera. My XTi quickly began to feel like a toy after I got the 5D. But you need to go out an shoot a few times to adopt to the new 5D body style and image style.

Enjoy this time of exploration with the 5D. It's worth every penny!!!

Thanks for your responces! You have eased my mind that there was something wrong with the sensor but seeing as others are reporting similar behavior, I can breath a sigh of relief.:)

As for the cropping issues, sure, I knew all about that. That's one of the main reasons why I went to the 5D in the first place. I just wasn't aware of how the outer area of my lens was going to behave on this body and now I do and can certainly work with that.

As for the rest of of the 5D experience; Man! What a truly fine piece of engineering it is. Really solid and intuitive. I barely had to read the manual to get into all the settings as much of what I learned from the Rebel translated over to the 5D. Now, I just need to find a case that can hold the body and batter grip comfortably as my LowPro top loader zoom case is pretty snug!

Cheers! :)

Cool. Congrats again. The 5D is a beauty, that's for sure.
