Like this thread will get moved to Photo Sharing forums (as it isn't specifically about gear), but very decent shots with the kit lens.

Impressive with the kit lens. Bees are pretty docile as long as you give them room.

Which kit lens do you have?

To answer your question, the Canon 60mm f/2.8 macro is a really nice lens.

I normally shoot macros with manual focus because the autofocus just isn't reliable. But your 40D's live view is the ideal way to focus macros, I'd think. Have you tried it?

I have the 28-135. How much is is the 60mm f/2.8 macro? Also what would be a good portrait lens for about $350 to $400?

I have the canon 100 2.8 macro and am quite happy with it, but even that I find is to short sometimes especially with something that can sting you :)

a good portrait lens would be the canon 50 1.4 or the 85 1.8, actually with the 100 macro you can do good portraits if you have the distance

I paid $350 for mine. It's just the right focal length for portraits on a 1.6 crop camera, I think. Its biggest aperture is f/2.8, though, which won't give you the shallowest depth of field if that's your thing. I like it fine for portraits.

Any of the macro lens, but best money for quality would be the canon 100mm F2.8.

The 60mm macro is $361.95 at Amazon.

It's also an excellent portrait lens on a crop body like the 40D.
