I have used the opaque white coffee cup lids, turn off the auto focus change to infinity point at light source and been surprisingly happy with results. Now I keep one extra large lid in my camera bag along with the white, gray target card.

How does your coffe filter histogram compare to an expodisc pointed at the same lightsource?

Anyone know where you find the color balancing test numbers on the coffee filter package?

The credit goes to Tom Hicks, hence the name "Hickspodisc". I just shared the information.

I was mining through old post and thought this one should be resurrected. I am awaiting my samples of diffuser plates and plan to head over to my local used photo store for cheapo filters.

Never thought about the histogram don't own the expodisc.

Thanks to David John for the work and giving us the chance to copy it.

just moved up to a dslr. would this work if i were to stitch a piece of elastic on the filter and make something similar to a shower cap, removing the need for the filters? where's a good place to purchase a couple of cheap clear filters? all the filters i'm finding on ebay are uv filters.

Photoshop.....

What I've done that sort of seems to work is to perform a WB with whatever material you think might work. Now shoot a gray card or something else that is known to be color neutral. Bring the image into Photoshop and use the sampling tool to look at the RGB values. If the WB is close, the RGB values should be within a couple of points of each other. Write the RGB numbers on the coffee filter if you wish

Megapixels and high ISO are a digital photographers heroin. Once you have a little, you just want more and more. It doesn't stop until your bank account is run dry.

All well and good. But for $8 USD or so I can buy a Chinese knock off.

IMO, it's a good idea, but re-invents the wheel. The time spent in gathering and purchasing the items and then assembling them is worth far more to me than the $70 for the Expodisc.

Hey I went looking for an expodisc and got all this for less than the price of an expodisc in Hong Kong (even includes a WB disc) ;) :
