does it compare to the expodisc as well as the hickspodisc does?

I have no idea, I have hardly used mine, besides i do not have the expodisc or hickspodisc to compare with.

But it came in the same brown plastic tht is there in the pic that Ninja posted

Cheers

Probably a better question than how does it compare, is how well does it work?

Who knows :D

But seriously, any test that I can follow? Since I have one, I dont mind pasting a review. Am not "technically" inclined so I mite need some hand holding.

I actually purchased a cheap dual axis spirit level from this ebayseller (for abt $1 USD), and decided to include this WB cap as well.

Cheers

The reason to buy an Expodisc or any other white balanced (calibrated) solution is to save time.

If the device isn't calibrated and if you can't do it easily and quickly, then you might as well just use any white, gray or black thing you find in the environment in which you shoot. You don't even need to go to the work of assembling this thing.

Simply put, if it isn't calibrated and you have to do anything else to make it balanced, then you don't get the benefit and you don't need to be all that picky about what you do use.

How could've this thread be dormant for over a year? Excellent idea and very innovative. Since I'm handy and a DIY kinda of guy, will definitely have this done quickly.

This looks to be a really fun project. I'm tackling this very soon :)
Thanks OP!

I love saving money when it's easy, and doesn't take much time... This is exactly it.

bump to get this thread read by everyone! recently picked up two clearance tiffen 67mm uv filters for $5 a pop, got a pckg of the respirator filters for around $15 (not as easy to find as youd think! most stores only carry the masks or the sets with the respirator included, which is much more expensive)... results are impressive!!! i use a neutral white balance card for most situations, but for certain situations and when you know the light is constant on the source, this disc kicks some ACE... better at mixed lighting than a traditional WB card also, as it creates a diffused light pattern for the custom WB... and best of all it took about 5 minutes to cut out the filter and screw the two filters together (didnt bother with the pretty plastic glued onto the front, thats cosmetic anyway, and it doesnt look bad at all without it) and saved me about 90 bucks! and for an extra $10 each, i can make about 9 more!

I couldn't find the P95 filter, so I ended up getting the mask type N95. I had to squish the mask a bit but it works ok. Will still try to find proper filter later. As for the light fixture panel I was lucky that work had a broken one so I took it home for free. Well here is my first test, no need to explain before and after it is quite obvious . No PP at all. EDIT I thought it might be more interesting re shooting the light , Or should I shoot a subject near it ?

i bought one of those ^ from online. it does work great, however when using an external flash, all of the white balance/expodisc goes out the door. i'd recommend purchasing one of those if you shoot fast primes. I use it once in a while.

You might as well use a pringles lid since I doubt these are color balanced, tested and verified either.

What's the point?

  1. They cost barely a buck (the ebay ones)
  2. I dont eat pringles
  3. Pringles here comes with a clear lid
  4. The ebay ones can be screwed directly to the lens, unlike the pringles lid

1. Then pick something else at hand that you *think* is white. You are just giving up one tint for another since there is no guarantee these are neutral. In other words, this is a waste of time.
2. I don't either.
3. See #1.
4. You don't screw it on anyhow. that is an incredibly big hassle if you want to set a custom WB easily.

It costs less than pringles ( even with shipping).
It is non fattening, no cholesterol.
Pringles here are 4.00
And I cant stand them.
