I would more then likely use the 10D for the night time sports shots. How would the IQ be from the 10D to 1D in studio, and out door portrature??

Canon 1DMkII, 10D w/grip, 28-135 IS, 70-200 2.8 L, 300 f4 L IS, 1.4 MkII, 2X MkII, and too much more to list.

With good light 1D would rule over 10D because the pixel size is much larger than the 10D's. 1D also has a thinner AA filter which yields sharper images. For night time *sports*, I would still take a 1D over a 10D. Noise is almost similar.

You'll probably find yourself using the 1D for all sports, daytime and night. It's ISO isn't the strongest but if you nail exposure it's not unusable. The speed compensates for any noise you'd normally object to.

Some people will say the 1D is better than the 10D and others will tell you the 10D is better at low ISO. I don't sit and measurebate with side-by-side screens of the same image with both cameras so I can't say much about it. I think the 10D is fine at lower ISOs as well and don't hesitate to use it. It's dog slow compared to the 1D though so that's a big factor in which camera I'll pick up. If I'm just dickering around and can take my time I'll use the 10D. If I need to bang out a bunch of shots I'll get the 1D. There are just too many variables that make up IQ to say one is definitely better than the other.

Honestly if you do what you need to do as a photographer, the gear won't limit you. The megapixels, noise and battery life are pretty much the only factors that should be a concern. If none of those bother you, the gear will be more than adequate.

Not trying to hijack this thread, but I am in same boat. wanting to upgrade to 1D series and keep 10D as backup, just cant decide on 1D or mkII. I shoot 40% portrature, 40% commerical, 15% wildlife, and 5% grandkids night time sports. I am really leaning towards 1D also, how do the 2 compare in those areas??

Let me share my experience. I had a D30 and was very happy with it until I wanted larger prints. Sold it and got the 10D. That was a perfect match to my 420EX. Now with kids doing sports, I needed something faster... found a cheap 1D and was very happy with it (sold my 10D). I also shoot ballet (my daughter's) in dark environment and the 1D was lacking a bit and I thought the 1D2 would be a perfect blend of 1D+10D. Sold the 1D and got a 1D2. I was extremely happy and found a perfect body. Over time, the weight just got to me... I also wanted something smaller and lighter for trips and weddings (without looking like the hired pro). I wished I hadn't sold my 10D. Bottom line: I just bought another 1D, gonna sell my 1D2, and buy a 5D or some other gripless body. Like people say, different body for different needs. Hope it helps.

I decided to pass on the 1D offered to me after the last response from the owner gave me pause. I will remain happy with my current bodies and keep looking.

Thanks again to all.

Why? What'd he/she say?

I suppose the 1D you're contemplating isn't your brother's right? 10k clicks is almost brand new! I might even take it and get a cheapo XT for the price of my 1D2! ($850 x 2 + $250) is still less than my 1D2! ;)

The price was $1050. Actuations were originally estimated at 7000+. I sent him software and found them higher (10000+) so tried to tweak it back a bit. Didn't go over well and once things become less friendly I don't pursue further on a deal that would require MO or cashier's check to go first no matter what ratings are.

Oh well.

I would only take a 1D for less than $900.

I would have been happy to pay a couple hundred extra to try a very nice body over the course of 6-12 months. The owner kept quoting prices at KLH and local camera stores in the $1300-1350 range. Nothing I've seen sold here in ANY condition has been more than $950 recently. It's not a big deal as we all have that number that we think our stuff is worth and a lot of times it's more than what others think, especially when they're trying to buy it. :)

Plunk in a $200 shutter replacement and you're good to go! Hell, Canon might even plunk in a 1D2 shutter for that matter (if compatible).

Big difference in actuations and usage. Given that some have had shutter failures reported here at 42k actuations under hard 8.3 fps usage I'd rather not get something that might need a little extra spending at Canon Service. ;)

MTBF is 150K I believe. Are you planning to shoot movies with it? ;) Sh1t happens...even a 1D Mark III can fail early.
