1 thing you can try is go to bestbuy or some local store and pick up 30D and 40D and test it to see which one you like .

For me to pick : 40D is a winner .

I have to say that at this moment in time (providing the extra $300 is not an issue) I can't see why anyone would buy a 30D over a 40D.

I have had both, and while I absolutely love the 30D (and there are some things about it I miss), the 40D is, to me, a better camera in many respects.

Since I picked up the 40D 3 weeks ago I have shot over 5000 images and it hasn't missed a beat once - it's running perfectly.

At the launch of any new product there will always be a small percentage of 'faulty' items (I believe most manufacturers allow 4-5% return) but I can assure you that the VAST amount of people who have bought a 40D are very, very happy.

NOTE: This is my personal opinion and everyone is entitled to disagree - just don't say 'Your opinion is wrong!'

Hmm.. thank you again everyone!

Although I don't need anything else photography related, I don't want to spend money on something I don't need in a camera. The main thing that had me drooling over the 40D is how everyone says it focuses even faster than the 30D. But no one says the 30D is slow, right? It's hard to read "the 40D is better" without subconsciously feeling like it says "the 30D sucks," even though that may not be the case.

Off to think some more. Good thing I'm giving myself until December to decide!
Thank you again!

I don't have a 40D (30D and 5D) so I can only reflect on what some say here, that the 40D is better on auto-focusing and especially AI Servo focusing mode. These things would interest you since you're dealing with active children!

I'm not sure of how much objective comparison has been done between the two -- it might be worth a look at some of the review sites. I know that focusing and the faster burst speed interest me more than Live View when I consider an upgrade.

Happy photographing!

Tony

QX56- Thanks! Yep, I have done that, and to be honest, I was in awe of both cameras (remember, coming from a rebel), and did not get to experience a full test to feel like one was clearly better than the other for me.

Helrain- Thank you for your input! It's true that I am certainly hearing a lot more from the unhappy 40Ders than the happy ones (they must be too busy shooting). You know, it will come down to whether or not I want the extra cash. As a college student, I feel like my smartest decision right now would be to go the 30D route and then when I upgrade just move to the nicest body I can afford then.

The 30D won't let me down, right? I'm not going to be disappointed am I? (Seriously, if anyone thinks I will be, please chime in!)

Also- Helrain-- you've got me curious now... what it is that you miss about your 30D?
Thanks in advance!

As I've stated in the past I highly doubt you'll be disappointed in the 30D. I'm not with mine at all.

Thanks for the offer QX56! I think I want to stick with new though, but if I change my mind, I'll let you know. :)

Nice shots John! Especially the family at the beach jumping! Thanks for sharing!

I bought my 30D a year ago and love it. I just purchased a 5D a couple weeks ago knowing or at least reading the rumors of the next generation 5D and that it will be out after the first of the year. I tend to be a fast follower when it comes to purchasing the latest technology and I wait 6-12 months before buying the latest and greatest technology. I like to let the manufactures work out the initial early production quality issues. Buy the 30D and go take some pictures. Rod

Thanks Rod! I think that's what I'm leaning towards! My thought process now is that the 30D is a great camera that will meet my needs, and now that the 40D is here, the 30D is still great, but I can buy it cheaper!

Thanks again all! :)

Yeah, there is not reason to think that the 30D all of a sudden is a sub-par body b/c the 40D came out. That's just ridiculous thinking.

Coming from the 300D, you will be AMAZED at the 30D. It's fast. It's solid. Bigger LCD. Better performance overall.

I really like my 30D. I was using a 400D until the wife took it over when I picked up the 30. Yeah the 40D has some new features but none I think I need at the moment. Here are a few photos to show how well the 30D does with ISO and AF tracking.

This was at ISO 3200

And this was shot using AF Servo
