heyyoh POTN,

im starting to shoot a lot more cars right now, and im looking into getting a telephoto lens that can isolate the car from the background while producing some very nice looking bokeh.

i came across this picture on the internet

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v244/erykv1/004-1.jpg (external link)

and since theres no exif data, i cannot really tell what lens it was taken with. im thinkng some sort of telephoto, off the top of my head im thinking a 70-200, or maybe a 135.

since we can probably never find out exactly what it was shot with, will most telephotos provide the bokeh effect im looking for? my current lens setup is 50mm 1.8, tokina 12-24, and a sigma 17-70.

the closest i can get to something like the picture i posted is on the 70mm end of my sigma. could my 50mm 1.8 produce something similar? or am i looking at shelling out some money for a telephoto?

thanks

eric

To be honest, you should be able to do a similar shot with your 50mm. Since there is a little bokeh it appears to have been shot with a smaller aperature like a f8 give or take a couple of stops (or even smaller since I am guessing). A larger aperature like f2.4 or even 1.8 would have really blurred the back ground and you would have had a smaller DOF. The only advandage to purchasing a new lens is that you would have some extra glass, but I would experiment with what you have first and then go looking for more. Since you are a broke college student, make due with what you have. Use your feet to zoom with the 50 and use a tripod and good natural light to give you a clean/clear shot.

I'd definitely try 17-70 @ 70. I've seen some car guys who prefer to shoot with a 70-200 from afar so that they can achieve the narrow depth of field for pictures similar to the one you found.

It looks like it was taken quite a way back, probably with a lens around 135-200mm if on FF or 85-135 on APS-C. As others have said, greater separation from the background would have been possible - looks like quite a small aperture has been used.

I agree. Looks exactly like a tele zoom shot from a distance.

I think you can spot the photog on the right blinker. I think is the 50f1.4 at 2.8 or the 85mmf1.8 at 2.8 also

Clearly by that quality, it's taken on the 7 megapixel camera phone
