Going from the 30D to the 40D is a great step and very worth the effort to get there in terms of picture quality and many new features.

However, with any developing technology there are sometimes "minor setbacks" that will occur with this process.

Some that I have found JUST from live view mode When in use
Live view eats batteries
shutter is getting used a LOT more

i'd have thought those issues were fairly obvious to be honest.

1, live view will be repeated reading from the sensor, converting the raw data and trying to display on the screen. the digic processor will be hammering away like a loony using up battery life just reading and converting the image, and then you've got LCD to power cause its constantly on ?

2, well yeah ... the light has to get to the sensor somehow, and that is past the shutter. more images in live view means more time the shutter is open.

i wouldn't call them setbacks ... a car dont go faster without using more petrol, so why should a camera's battery life be any different ?

I dont' even call that setback when 30D doesn't have live view :)
