I don't have a 40D, so can someone explain the feature (well, how it works)? Does it require a double shutter trip to expose the CMOS chip prior to exposure, then to cock and re-expose?

I use it for its Exposure Simulation or whatever its called, Look at that then flick back to view finder to take the pic. Only do that in tricky lighting situations where i dont want to snap off 50 test shots.

I use it mostly for the live histogram. Very handy for a quick check of my exposure, even when handheld. Greatest help with very long lenses and manual focus.

Live view is not as useful as I thought it would be - I will probably try it when I next have a macro job or a landscape. I find the AF is trustworthy enough.

The LCD screen could do with being mounted on a swivel to make it more use. Having said that, I have an angle finder which I thought would be the absolute cat's whiskers until I bought it - I now hardly used it except for a bit of macro.

I don't use it but this seems like a good use of it.

Never should be an option. I don't understand why Canon even included this option, unless it was to appeal to the hobbyist market.

With prices on cameras such as these heading the way they are, I would imagine this is exactly why Canon included it. It doesn't do anyone any harm though.

So long as it's enabled in the menu, you just press the "Set" button and the mirror pops up and you get a Live View.
Exposure is taken after this point, but there's nothing stopping you doing a seperate exposure before hand

That's quite close minded.
There are plenty of uses for it, and I hear some pros are happy for it's addition.

I voted on 10-20, but I have only used it once (just to try it out, with instruction manual in-hand). I have never used it since. I don't do these normally, but for my next macro shot, I will try to use it.
