Hey Spam, at the meetup you mentioned a graffiti wall in Melbourne. Did you find it?

Nah, we didnt. Although a quick search on flickr tells me that there is some pretty interesting stuff down Caledonian Lane (where ever that is).

I know exactly where that is. I've walked by it more times than I can count and never knew it was there. I guess I"m going to have to make another trip into the city.

Caledonian Lane is off of Lonsdale. It is right behind the MacDonalds that is on the corner of Lonsdale and Swanston. I had to look on a map. I've walked right by it a number of times too and never noticed it. I think I need to start paying more attention when I am out walking around the city.

Hi fellow melbournians!

Just found this thread, interested to know where you all source your gear from. I could launch into a massive tirade against the Elizabeth street ripoffs but I've channeled my rage into research and have been mostly using B&H Photo now. Warranty is very important to me so I avoid grey market joints.

I get most of mine from Adorama. :)

What are you looking at buying? Lenses and Speedlites have international warranty, so that's one thing you can definitely buy grey market and not worry about.

I'm really tempted to buy a 85L

Excluding grey market places like photobuff the cheapest I have found is Vanbar which sells if for $2800 AUD. No other camera store in the city is willing to even consider it at this price, and I suspect Vanbar imports it themselves, but given they are a Canon dealer I'd say the warranty will be pretty safe.

I was tempted by the 135L too, they sell it for $990 AUD which is pretty much the same as BH Photo but from Australia. Vanbar has some stuff really cheap but they are a ripoff for most items, I've found there's no one store that is always the cheapest, you always have to shop around

lol I'm paranoid about the warranty cause haven't had good experiences with Canon Aus

Lenses have international warranty so it doesn't matter where you buy it. Just buy it from Adorama or B&H and be done with it!

Even with GST and shipping, it'll still be miles cheaper than anywhere locally here.
You're right, Vanbar might just import it themselves, so why let them take such a big piece of the cake? :p

Otherwise, try DDP (external link), they have it for $2235 +postage.

I've used DDP also. I bought a 40D and grip and 70-200 2.8L IS. At the time I was ordering there wasn't much difference between the price if I ordered from B&H and paid GST or if I ordered from DPP. So I went with DPP so that I didn't have to wait two weeks, which is what I was being told international would take from B&H.....at least at that time anyway. DPP was great. No complaints at all. I ordered early in the day and received my order the next day.

BH's delivery time is fairly decent now (order Monday, can collect from UPS on Thursday - so my parents don't find out) but damn it is expensive freight costs :(
