If I interpreted it correctly, than my earlier personal tests support that the noise performance is no better (actually, slightly worse) than the 30D...

it's because 30d (and 350d) has higher sensitivity than indicated. :)

Same size sensor + more megapixels = more pixel density + less detail + more noise

I figure the 5D will have the best overall noise performance for any digital SLR even after the 5D successor is released, because it will likely have more megapixels than the 5D, giving it slightly worse noise performance.

Where do you get less detail from more pixels? More pixels allow capture of finer detail. Granted, the difference is less than 10%, but it is there.

I believe you are correct, unless one turns High Speed Noise Reduction on (C.Fn II-2), which seems to drop it below the 30D at all ISO's.

More pixels in the same amount of area means smaller pixels on the sensor, which means the camera has to invent more pixels on its own because it's not getting as much detail from the smaller pixels, meaning more noise.

The 5D and 1D II have the largest pixels on the sensor, and coincedentally have the least noise, and most detail. Less megapixels, but high quality ones.

Edit: That was a reply to Jon btw, meant to quote the post.

I just read the whole thing. They basically say that all the new features are very nice and an improvement over the 30D but they also say

If anything the EOS 40D looks slightly less crisp 'per pixel' than the EOS 30D

and there is less detail in the high ISO shots than the 30d due to in camera noise reduction. I dont own a 40d (yet) but can't you turn off the in camera noise reduction? According to the review you can only turn off the 'High ISO speed noise reduction' option but basic noise reduction is always on. This really sucks because it is almost like shooting JPEG instead of raw with a loss of detail that can't be recovered.
