Bear in mind the difference in controls between the 40D and XTi, as well as the different batteries. That's my main reservation. I have absolutely no problem with either the 24-70 2.8 L or the 580EX - I travel with both.

Brides WILL notice your gear, and I do agree that keeping a consistent interface will be important. You might consider trading the XTi in for a 30D, and getting a 40D as prime body for now. I don't think you have to get the 24-70, particularly since you already have the 50/1.4 "just in case". I use my 5D for low-light and static images (landscape, portraiture, travel, etc.) and my 40D for sports and action. Different tools for different needs.

For lenses, if you intend to shoot landscapes and weddings, then the 17-55 IS for 40D and 24-70 L for 5D. i think using a 17 - 55 IS in the 40D and the 24 - 70 in the 5D seems so close of a focal length. considering the 17 - 55 x 1.6 = 27.2mm on it's widest range while the 24 - 70 on a full frame is 24mm on it's widest range. it would be better to pair the 24 - 70 with a 10 - 20/22ish UWA lens. I like your suggestion.I will wait for holidays hoping prices will come down. 1D MARK III, 5D, 40D 24-70 2.8L,70-200 2.8L IS,135 2.0L,50 1.4,85 1.8
