Bear in mind the difference in controls between the 40D and XTi, as well as the different batteries. That's my main reservation. I have absolutely no problem with either the 24-70 2.8 L or the 580EX - I travel with both.

If money is not a consideration, I'd get the 5D if I were you. The obvious downside is not being able to share EF-S lenses and batteries with the XTi.

For lenses, if you intend to shoot landscapes and weddings, then the 17-55 IS for 40D and 24-70 L for 5D.

I agree with most of what's been said here, except that if you want to seriously shoot weddings you will need a different camera body. Brides WILL notice your gear, and I do agree that keeping a consistent interface will be important. You might consider trading the XTi in for a 30D, and getting a 40D as prime body for now. I don't think you have to get the 24-70, particularly since you already have the 50/1.4 "just in case".

A great compact kit would be: tamron 17-50/2.8, 50/1.4, 70-200/2.8IS, 2 flashes, 30D, and 40D.

Current: 5DM3, 6D, 8mm fish, 24-105/4IS, 35/2IS, 70-200/2.8IS, 85/1.8, 100-400/IS v1, lensbaby composer with edge 80, 580's and AB800's

For wedding, I would...

a. Buy 5D for the 70-200/2.8L IS to attach to.
b. Sell Xti and get a 30D (or 40D) for the Tammy 17-50/2.8 to attach to.
c. Even better, sell the Tammy and get the 17-55/2.8IS for the crop body,
d. Buy a 580EX II

Or

Get the brick 24-70/2.8L for the 5D and put the 70-200/2.8L IS on the crop body.
But you should notice that there is about 40mm gap to fill for this combination. You can do it by moving yourself to the right spot. The good thing is you can share your lenses between bodies.

Low-light, night, landscape, weddings all smell like a 5D to me!

x2. I use my 5D for low-light and static images (landscape, portraiture, travel, etc.) and my 40D for sports and action. Different tools for different needs.

i think using a 17 - 55 IS in the 40D and the 24 - 70 in the 5D seems so close of a focal length. considering the 17 - 55 x 1.6 = 27.2mm on it's widest range while the 24 - 70 on a full frame is 24mm on it's widest range. it would be better to pair the 24 - 70 with a 10 - 20/22ish UWA lens.

I like your suggestion.I will wait for holidays hoping prices will come down.
Trade the XTI for a used 30D and buy a 40D for almost the cost of a 5D
Thanks
Nuke
