Since getting the 5D, I've shot more wide angle with my 24-105 than with my XT. I'd suggest a wide angle lens and also get an external hard drive because of all the disk space you'll be using.

I'd suggest sening the Canon filters back and going with a multi-coat offering from B&W or Hoya.

And ditto what Ronald said.

Concur. Canon reportedly OEMs its filters from Tiffen (not Quantaray, who may also get them from Tiffen). They're nowhere near the quality of good filters like the B+W MRC, Heliopan SH-PMc or Hoya S-HMC filters. While there's lots of talk about a filter's effect on IQ, the only reproducible examples, that didn't show similar problems with the unfiltered lenses, have been with Canon, Tiffen, Quantaray, or other low-end filter lines.

If you could also get a 35L.. you got yourself hell of a system. :)

Chris, congrats with your order! A great cam, and lenses too.

I just placed an order for a 5D with a grip too, got the 24-70 some time ago... one nice combo waiting to be made. :D

Why does it have to take so much time to wait for the camera? :(

When I bought my 5D I automatically bought the grip based on my experience with the Elan 7E and grip. However, I have rarely used it as the 5D body is substantial and I rarely need the extra battery power. I'd say it is a non-essential accessory. Almost all "L" lenses are fantastic on the 5D and I really love the 17-40 and the 24-105. 35L is also an amazing lens for low-light work.

Just ordered a few things:

5d body
Canon 70-200 2.8 is
Canon 85 1.8
Canon 58mm Haze UV-1
Canon 77mm Haze UV-1

(I dont know much about filters. I really just want to wack them on to help protect my lens)

Sandisk
4GB Extreme III CompactFlash Card
Spare battery

Far out im getting excited. Am I missing anything. ive got a camera bag and all that at home. I was thinking about grabbing a battery grip. How important are they?
Im shooting alot of urban and portraiture at the moment.

I have $1700 remaining, but I wouldnt mind putting that away and investing in a bowens flash setup when I have enough.

cheers chris

Excellent choice except....

Return the filters. You don't really need filters if you use the hoods. If you still feel compelled to use a filter, then get B+W UV MRC filters. the canon ones are generally considered to be pretty low end filters.

If you don't have one, the best walkaround lens for the 5D is the 24-105. They were designed for each other. Either that or get the 16-35 f/2.8 or maybe the 24-70 f/2.8.

If you like primes then look at the 35 f/1.4 or if you are really into IQ then one of the Zeiss ZF 50mm's.

A third on getting another CF card - get an 8GBer

A grip is a big thing to me - I'd get that also...

And a 24-70mm 2.8L would be the next lens I'd get...

Chris, you might want to think about getting a second memory card. Having roamed around this forum and a couple of others, I have seen many complaints by people about how their memory cards go bad. They can often get the existing images off them, but can no longer record anything. I have three, a 4Gb (everyday) and a 2GB (backup) as well as the 256k that came with the XT (since upgraded to a 5D). Who knows, you may fill up the 4 Gb and then what (?)...HTH

Cheers,

WesternGuy

I'll definitely second the need for another card, but my suggestion is if you're shooting RAW or RAW+JPG, get an 8 gig card and use it as your main card and use the 4 gig as a second/backup.

I don't know how many shots you take in a given situation, but a 4 gig card will only hold a bit over 200 from the 5D and it doesn't take even half a day for me to go through that many shots if I'm really actively shooting.

The 8 gig card holds 465 RAW shots and that usually exceeds the amount of shots I do in one session. You don't have to fumble around looking for that spare nearly as much!

thanks again guys. Yes I returned those canon filters and went with B+W MRC's.
I think I will try and save another $3000 and buy a studio setup for my double garage. Ive been studying portraiture this term and it is fantastic. Definately something i'd like to get into in the near future.
Thanks again to everyone who responded

I would get another 4GB CF, sensor cleaning kit, lens cleaning kit, the battery grip, extra battery, remote switch and a tripod. How about a bag?

Don't forget the POTN Camo vest or camera strap...!

And of course you will need my shipping address once you gather all of the goodie s to send them all in...I will cover S/H ...;)

Congrats on the purchase.!
