If you can just have one lens for sight seeing that's a good choice. But if I was taking that trip, I'd beg, borrow, or steal a 10-22 and take that along too. Patagonia, Damn!! Don't forget your cir. polarizer.

Ditto on this suggestion or the Tokina 12-24 (which ever is cheaper both are great for *wide* landscapes on a crop body)
In addition to the CP pick up a neutral density gradient for sunsets/rises.
Have fun.

Lotsa stuff, running outta room and a wife...I keep looking at her and wondering???

Going on a 4 month trip with something like the 10-22 is just too darn limiting. Sure it takes great pics, but they get old in a hurry. I mean imagine bumping into a eucalyptus tree with a koala hanging up high so you snap a pic at 22mm and all you get is a speck and a great blooming tree. 

If you’re limiting to only one lens, the 17-85IS is a nice choice from Canon as is the Siggy 18-200OS or the Tammy 18-250. The three are mid-level lenses, all have fairly decent IQ and the range of the 18-200 and 18-250 make them very versatile. For about double the money but a big jump in IQ you have the 24-105IS. It’s simply a great lens.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

But he's got a crop cam. Patagonia is going to require at least a 17 at the wide end, no?
If one is going to spend the dough, then the 17-55 would seem better.
