Ok... well let me throw this one at you. If you're happy with your 20D, why not pick up another 20D.

Because I HATE that tiny display screen..I have no clue whether I have got a decent shot until I get home and see them on the computer. I think the 30D is going to really help in that regard.
Karen

Just telling it like it is... but I thought the same way. And at first, I was really stoked about the new bigger screen, and how much I'd be able to tell now if I got the shot or not, but the reality of it is... In THAT regard, the moderately larger LCD didn't help a single bit. Sure the images look a little bigger, but unless you zoom in nice and close, you can't tell if the eyes are razor sharp... and I can do that with my 20D as well.

Ya'll know you can magnify a pic on the screen right? :p

That's what I do. Takes an extra second to look to make sure you got the shot.

instead of the 40D??? MY thinking was...#1 I'm not a pro, #2 Cheaper #3 controls are the same (almost) as on my 20D. I basically want a second camera to keep another lens on when out shooting. Mostly birds, wildlife. The 20D has been sufficient and I am not real camera savvy (read Newby and uneducated). I had a 300D to start with, and now when I go back to it, I can't remember how to set everything because it is so diff. than the 20D. Is my reasoning sound about getting a 30D to keep the controls similar???? (and yes I've read the threads about how nice the 40D is)
Karen

one reason i bought the 30d was its control are identical to my 5d and so are the features.

i don't see how you can be making a mistake :D!

Yeeeesssss, but it is STILL a small screen and, without getting into specifics, :p hard for these older eyes to see. I think the 2.5" display will make at least a little difference. Time will tell.

Thanks, Ed. I don't want to be there fumbling with the second camera if I haven't used it in a bit--- and trying to remember how to change the settings when you're out and have a one shot chance at Bigfoot or Elvis. :)

Yep - my 20D and 5D differ only (for all intents and purposes) in how you set the clock.

Hey Karen.. Personally I think you made the right choice.. I know at least one person that has not been satisfied with the 40D, and I have seen a few comments around here that made me very happy that I got the 30D in addition to my 20D. I do find the quality a bit better on the 30D, even after I had my 20D redone by Canon. I feel like the burst is faster on the 30D and that the quality is a bit better and I love the larger display and the fact that the controls are so very similar.. If I up grade from here it will be to a full CMOS ie: 5D :)

Thanks Joayne...the camera is already ordered as of noon...I posted this question this AM when having last minute misgivings. I think I did the right thing and your note just affirms that. My 20D needs to go to Canon too, I think it just isn't performing like it did when I first got it.

That actually happened to my brother, he lost a bunch and it broke his heart! I put everything on CD's the same day I process the shots. I've thought about the second hard drive, just haven't done it. Anyway, the 30D is ordered, too late to change my mind. :) You can drive yourself crazy trying to make up your mind.
Karen

Karen,

Happy shooting with your 30D! I'm quite happy with mine, though I mostly use a 5D. The 30D has a high-speed continuous shooting fps of 5, which is faster than the 5D of 3, and I have used the 30D a lot with wildlife where I can get a bit of a closer cropped view than the 5D. And though there are things that I like about the 40D, I'm another one who won't ditch my 30D to make that move.

As far as storage goes, if you do a lot of shooting, I would seriously think about not just one, but two external hard drives -- one for storing your library and one for backing up your whole library. Disks are good to use as well, but they can be easily damaged, and a hard drive is more convenient for quick use. As for using a second for your main library, if you get a USB 2.0 or firewire one, they are speedy and these days you can get a 500 gig HD for a hundred bucks, which is pretty cheap for the peace of mind and the convenience. Plus, some graphics apps perform better if your main hard drive isn't clogged -- with photos, music and such moved to an external drive you might get better performance.

Have fun!

Tony

I love my 30D. The only reason I am planning to go from my 400D(my second camera) to a 40D is- 1/weather sealed - safe to use in damp conditions, 2/good for 100,000 shots-that is plenty.
30D is a great camera - I will wait till the price drops before I buy the 40D. Maybe next year or maybe a refurbished one???

Thanks for the tip, that is probably the thing to do. I just am not terribly computer savvy and hesitate to get into adding things.

Is this a proven fact re:weather sealing being bad. Pentax has a model that is weather sealed and works well.
