As far as storage goes, if you do a lot of shooting, I would seriously think about not just one, but two external hard drives -- one for storing your library and one for backing up your whole library. Disks are good to use as well, but they can be easily damaged, and a hard drive is more convenient for quick use. As for using a second for your main library, if you get a USB 2.0 or firewire one, they are speedy and these days you can get a 500 gig HD for a hundred bucks, which is pretty cheap for the peace of mind and the convenience. Plus, some graphics apps perform better if your main hard drive isn't clogged -- with photos, music and such moved to an external drive you might get better performance.

Have fun!

Tony

Thanks for the tip, that is probably the thing to do. I just am not terribly computer savvy and hesitate to get into adding things.

Heh! The Modern Era! I've seen a lot of comments from photographers wryly commenting on how their photography these days requires a lot of learned expertise on computer tech -- not just the amazing and complicating software that we have but the systems and peripherals that we need to do the work. It seems intimidating at first, but they are tools for what we want to do, you get over the learning curve and then, hey, you're a geek:)!

The so called weather sealing is pitiful.

It shouldn't even be called weather sealing. Ridiculous.
The 40D is a fine camera. But I love my 30D and truly feel no compulsion whatsoever to "upgrade" to the 40D. There are those who upgrade with every new version but that seems ludicrous to me. The thrill for them seems to come from the equipment more so than from the photos they create.
When the 50D or 60D is available, I might consider. And I could be tempted by the 5D replacement depending on what it offers and at what price.
But really, the 30D is a camera that can serve you well for a long time to come.

Well, I can say I've come a long way from when I began! But no one is EVER gonna call ME a geek. <laughing insanely>

Think of what it took to learn the art of developing your own film. I learned B/W and dealing with the chemicals, enlargers, film...etc. Computers are much less harmful to the lungs! I'm glad to be a geek! :)

karen:
I agree with most everyone else here. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the 30D. In fact I know a lot people who apply this practive to their computer purchases. By staying one generation behind, they are still current with today's technology but are able to purchase it more cost effective. Like most everyone else here, wait a couple of months to see if the price becomes cheaper, then decide.
Happy shooting!
Rich
