I'm still having trouble figuring out what to get my girlfriend for christmas. Ok now I'm thinking I should get my girlfriend the 40D for Christmas but then the more I think about it the more I think it would be better to get her a 30D with a 50 1.4...... she loves taking portraits. Is this a bad idea or should i just get her the 40D and let her buy her own lenses? (but she doesnt have alot of money)

The 40D without a lens is kinda like getting a toy with no batteries. I hated that.

Not to take anything away from the 40D, the 30D is a great camera in its own right. If she's limited by money on getting her own glass, the 30D/1.4 option lets her use it from the start. She'll probably learn a lot, not to mention having a good deal of fun along the way.

A body and glass collects pictures and skill. A body without glass collects dust.

Whoa for the simultaneous post. However, in that case, what are you going to be shooting with?

I would by the 40D for yourself and give her your 30D. Just my opinion.

you answered your own question - she's into photography and your not getting her the latest & greatest. Don't let her down get the 40D.

^What!? No. 'Cause if she's anything close to smart, she knows it's not the camera but the person behind it. Get her the 30D and some glass. My g/f keeps joking about getting into photography but there's so much to it she's afraid. When I get my 40D, whenever that may be, the 20D will be hers. I thought about selling, but I think she might get some use out of it. if not, I'll use it for awhile as I got some weddings and stuff.

Aniwho, OT, get her camera and glass. She'll be happy, or should. It's a good test. ;)

How about a 40D and a 50mm f1.8? After a while, she can get her own lens.

I got my girlfriend a 40D along with the kit lens 28-135. She loves it. IMO, a zoom lens is more appropriate for her use. When she really needs a fast lens, I have plenty for her to borrow ;)

Before you stated she was a professional photographer, I would of said 30d w/ the lens but after I saw that she was a professional I'd say get the 40d.
