Photography major, not pro. I'm tellin ya man, get a camera and lens. It'll look better on your part than just a camera and throwing in your old lens.

Did I miss it? What gear does she have already? Lenses?
Is she going to sniff at something that isn't the latest and greatest?
"Oh boy! It's a....oh... 30D......." Long pause.

I had a similar problem. A friend who is a girl, but not my "girlfriend", has adopted my 400D and 300 f4. Haven't got the heart/stones to pry it from her hands ;)

I voted 30D and lens, no point having a good camera, and not a great lens, or no lens at all. :p

Memory cards are really cheap too

Come on...... If you're gonna go that far ya may as well get a memory card. They're what, 20 bucks now?

+1 to what was said above. I also voted for the 30D option. The camera is great!

Just because the 40D was released doesnt make the 30D extinct. A 40D and a 50 1.8 is just kinda stupid IMO. The 30D and an 85 1.8 is a lot better.

Sounds like the right choice to me. Then you can still lend her one of your lenses and she won't need to take it home with her. 40d and 50/1.8 is a totally capable combination.

Add a small memory card too, even a 1gb is better than nothing and if she's used to film it will still be a luxury to be able to take more shots than a couple rolls of film.

Guessing she hasn't got any lenses lying around for her film camera?

And if she won't give you a kiss, give the kit to me and I will. I'll let you use tongues for a 40D.

I'm with those who say the body and the lens is important. No fun having a toy you can't use right away. If you're going all out in getting her a camera and maybe a lens, don't cheap out on ten or twenty dollars worth of memory card after spending hundreds. You wouldn't be doing yourself or her any favours.

Body+lens+card. She can use it on the day and start taking pictures of you and everything else while she is still happy and excited. It'd make all the difference from having it sit gathering dust until she gets a lens and then a card.

30d so you'll have matching cameras. And get the T-shirts too.

Seriously, get the 40d with the 85 1.8. You only live once.

Ah the dillemas of gift-giving to significant others!

My wife's birthday is Dec 23. Before we got married, it was made clear that her birthday and Christmas are entirely separate occasions. One gift does not fit all!

I contemplated getting her a new car for her birthday, but not giving her the keys until Christmas. It was a very short contemplation when it dawned on me that, were I to try that, I wouldn't live to see Christmas.

Get her the 40D and either the 50mm f/1.4 or the 28-135mm.

If that really stretches the budget too much, then get the 50mm f/1.8. It's a very small stretch, and a very good lens for the price. Be immediately up front and honest about it. As soon as she open it, tell her it was the best lens you could afford right now, but you'll get a better one as soon as possible. Then start saving. Christmas is coming.

Question: If she's a photography major and shooting film now, what's she shooting with? Is there any chance that she could use some lenses she already has?
